This book is (literally) older than the Internet. Many of the ideas in this book will seem cliche to modern readers, until you realize that this is the book that invented the cliches. This is the book that coined the ideas (and in many cases even the words) of cyberspace, the matrix, AI hive mind, cyberpunk and the hacker anti-hero. It is not the greatest dialogue and some of the pacing is weird but the world-building was forty years ahead of its time and permanently shaped science fiction.

One of my all time favorite books, and winner of the Hugo, Nebula and Phillip K Dick awards. I'm amazed at this cornerstone of the genre having noses turned up at it by these previous genres. This book was a pioneer in cementing the popularity of cyberpunk, and as far as I remember, may have even coined the term "cyberspace". It's a wild ride and worth checking out from the library at the very least if these other negative comments steer you away from dropping two clams on it.

I read a lot of sci-fi and I love cyberpunk. I read this recently for the first time and it was very very bad.
      How was it bad?

Yeah. Great book for those reasons alone. I read it for the first time last year and didn't love it, but I did appreciate it.

I remember the same, wasn't the quickest, most absorbing read for me, even though it should have been right up my alley.

Internet is older than you think, and older than this book. It pre-dates most normal people's access to the internet.

Great book, just got done with the audio book in preparation for the upcoming TV show. Read it before that like 25 years ago. Absolutely visionary and I hope they do it justice. Is it perfect? No. But it was written a long time ago.

Very fair. I should have said older than the world wide web, though functionally synonymous with the Internet for most people.
