These make great ski base layers. They end right about at the top of your boot. Your base layer shouldn't go inside your boot and these prevent the usual bunch of material you get in the calf from normal length base layers.

Agreed. That's the intended use. Coldgear will keep you warmer than heatgear, but heatgear will still help with heat retention when worn as a base layer.
