ouch. back in the day Nishiki was a fabulous build bicycle from Japan. it hurts to see what happened to some brands like Schwinn et al.

Is it really? I just got one for my kid a couple days ago. Waiting for it to be built. What exactly is bad about it? Haven't picked it up so still have the opportunity to return it.

Dick's doesn't really sell good bikes. Strangely enough, you're better off getting a bike from Walmart now. The Ozark trail ones are actually quite decent.

This bike is perfectly fine for casual bike path riding. The specs on this are pretty much identical to a base model specialized rockhopper that costs twice as much. The only real caveat is this bike is a dead end upgrade-wise. Straight steerer tube and qr axles means there aren't really any upgrades worth doing to this bike. Though If it's maintained and lubed properly, it will last many years.

Suntour fork is not great but functional. Mechanical disc brakes are fiddly and annoying, but stopping power will be totally fine if they're adjusted well. Microshift stuff is really good for the money, and probably not noticeably worse than Shimano altus or tourney.

The people that are looking at a $300 bike from dicks aren't interested in black diamond trails. This is going to be absolutely fine for riding around the neighborhood with your kids.

For $300, not much. Mechanical disc brakes will probably be the most annoying thing for a casual bike rider.

The ozark trail is better, and the 1x9 drivetrain will probably be easier and more fun to operate than the 2x8 drivetrain on this nishiki. The ozark trail ridge also has a tapered headtube, so you COULD upgrade to a decent air fork, but you'd need a new front wheel and you'd be stuck with an old-school qr axle rear wheel. Personally I think it would be kinda stupid to spend any real money upgrading either bike. As to whether the ozark trail is worth $100 more, that's a tough call.

I just paid $449 for this. Thanks to this post, I'm getting the $150 price match!

The bike is perfectly adequate for me, an average user.

Newb here. Am I able to swap a couple of hybrid (normal?) tires on this and effectively turn this into a lighter hybrid bike?

it's not a bad bike if you need something in this price range. huge thumbs up for them to offer the small size with appropriate 27.5 wheels/170mm cranks which is ideal fit for smaller stature folks. i'd take the 2x8 drivetrain any day over a 1x9 as you have so much more gear range. you can also get this assembled which i'd highly recommend if you don't have any experience building a bike from a box.

The best piece of exercise equipment you will ever get, especially for $300. I have seen these on our Sierra foothills trails here in N Cal and the work. So easy to upgrade when you wear out the parts. Solid frame.

sure thing. Your basically turning it into a gravel or commute bike and you will notice much easier peddling, speed, and much quieter. Jensen has these at $20. and look fine: http://www.jensonusa.com/speciali...-29-tire-2 Also check out these: http://www.performancebike.com/wt...1/p1204960

Like others have said, Ozark Trail (Walmart) is a better spec, albeit for $100 more. I think going 1x (no front derailleur) is great at simplifying riding and is one less thing to have to worry about keeping adjusted properly.

If your kid is just going to be cruising around the neighborhood, this bike is perfectly fine. If you see him/her getting into mountain biking, go with the Ozark Trail as it will allow upgrades and is a more modern spec to start.
