Suntour fork is not great but functional. Mechanical disc brakes are fiddly and annoying, but stopping power will be totally fine if they're adjusted well. Microshift stuff is really good for the money, and probably not noticeably worse than Shimano altus or tourney.
The people that are looking at a $300 bike from dicks aren't interested in black diamond trails. This is going to be absolutely fine for riding around the neighborhood with your kids.

The ozark trail is better, and the 1x9 drivetrain will probably be easier and more fun to operate than the 2x8 drivetrain on this nishiki. The ozark trail ridge also has a tapered headtube, so you COULD upgrade to a decent air fork, but you'd need a new front wheel and you'd be stuck with an old-school qr axle rear wheel. Personally I think it would be kinda stupid to spend any real money upgrading either bike. As to whether the ozark trail is worth $100 more, that's a tough call.
The bike is perfectly adequate for me, an average user.

If your kid is just going to be cruising around the neighborhood, this bike is perfectly fine. If you see him/her getting into mountain biking, go with the Ozark Trail as it will allow upgrades and is a more modern spec to start.

If the choice is between the bike you linked and the Nishiki, the Nishiki is 100% worth the extra $100.
