Jurassic Park on 4K UHD is being discussed as a strong upgrade for picture and sound, with Dolby Vision bringing better color grading, contrast, and expanded colors, while the Atmos track adds overhead effects and appears to be a true new mix. The disc also includes the extras on the 4K release and a Movies Anywhere digital code. The main caution is that the new transfer may still be based on the older master, so the improvement may be more about color than a full cleanup. Playback also depends on the right hardware, since some consoles do not support Dolby Vision.

  • The release can provide Dolby Atmos immersive audio with added overhead effects compared to the older DTS:X track.

  • The Dolby Vision grading can improve color and contrast in night and day sequences.

  • Panasonic UB450 and UB820 players can support Dolby Vision, letting the disc's DV output be used on compatible setups.

  • Ripping the UHD disc can be a practical way to avoid streaming quality limits and can work fine with an LG drive.

  • The digital copy is redeemed through Movies Anywhere and streaming quality can be worse than the physical UHD disc.

  • PS5 playback may not include Dolby Vision support, which can limit the visual upgrade to UHD only.

  • The Dolby Vision upgrade may use the same older, slightly problematic transfer, so quality differences beyond color scheme may be limited.

  • Some reports contradict the Atmos claim by stating the audio track is DTS:X rather than Atmos.

I'm tired of buying these classic movies over and over again. DVD, Bluray, 4K, now 4K with Dolby Vision and Atmos.
c'mon now.
Yeah Amazon says I bought the Jurassic Park Ultimate Trilogy [Blu-ray] for $19.99 so how is this a deal? Blueray upmixed seems just as good to my eyes. 3 really great movies by the way.

Man, the fact that Jurassic Park is now going Dolby Atmos means DTS is truly dead (okay, that was clear for a long time, but JP was the first movie with DTS back in the 90s).

Makes sense. I have a PS5 and it's a huge disappointment that it doesn't have DV support. Know of any good relatively inexpensive players that I could use an alternative for my 4k blu rays? Everything I'm seeing is pretty pricey
Yeah, after learning neither console supports it (despite Series X supporting DV for Games), I bought a used Sony player (UBPX700) for about $150 on eBay a few years ago. It's decent enough, only issue is you have to manually enable and disable DV. For the price I can't complain; if the Panasonic player was cheaper, I'd go with that.

What I want to know is if this new dolby vision UHD is actually a better transfer than the previous HD10 UHD version which honestly was a disappointment. Dolby Vision itself I don't care about but the quality of the actual transfer as I already have the UHD which isn't as good as it should have been.
The reviews I have found seem to indicate same transfer with DV applies so that's a bummer as yeah, I agree old transfer has room to improve. With that said, it sounds like the Atmos audio is a true new mix, they didn't just take the DTS-X one and transcode it. Reviews are all positive on it so I'm pulling the trigger.

Yeah, I hate it too however this is one of the few films I'd be willing to do it for. I think I actually owned it on VHS too.

Thanks. While I have a partial ATMOS setup, honestly I don't feel like the "overhead" additions ever reflect a need for a double dip based on that alone. Certainly nice they are offering that, but an actual new scan and cleanup job on the OCN would have been an instant buy.
At this point, I'd rather watch my 3D version on my 4K OLED of Jurassic Park over the 4K version.

Panasonic ub450 has DV support, usually for significantly less than ub 820. They're difficult to find in stock though.
I own a ub820, and got a great deal on a BF deal years ago. But if the ub450 had been available, I probably would've went with it.
I've been eyeing the ub820 for a few years, but looks like the price has gone up more than I remembered it being. What sets ub450 apart from ub820?

It's a huge disappointment that you get a low to mid level 4K blu ray player for around $50 as an extension to a gaming console? Do you expect a high level blu ray player that costs almost as much as a digital PS5 for free in a gaming console lol. If you want a real POS 4K blu ray player, go look up how some of them don't even play triple layer 4K disks (I.e. disk one of Chernobyl set or Scarface). That's a real problem to have

JP is giving my Alien(s) and Terminator 2 collections a run for its money. Lost count of how many editions I purchased.

I know they added dolby vision. But is the film transfer new or the same? What about the video encode? Newer/higher bitrate?
Somewhat higher bitrate. A few scenes have better color timing. Colors are expanded beyond the Rec 709 gamut. More film grain. There are some added overhead effects compared to the older DTS: X track.

DTS and Dolby are not audio formats per se, but compression algorithms. The audio is originally uncompressed PCM. The DTS track was just a means of delivering a compressed version of the PCM multi-track to save space. DTS: X and Dolby Atmos immersive formats are a means by which to steer and pan PCM data to speakers in three-dimensions using directional metadata.

Slightly different build quality and the 450 lacks the HDR optimizer in the 820 and 9000, but it's not really necessary with the latest 4k HDR displays with better tone mapping. You do need a display with Dolby Vision or some way of tricking the output of pre-digested Low Latency Dolby Vision from the source device (player or streamer) to an HDR10 or HDR10+ flat panel or HDR projector that lacks DV. That would be something like an HDFury.

Wait, do you actually still have a 4K OLED that supports 3D? I think the last of those was the 2016 LG OLED C6s (year, same model name as today). Or are you saying, you're using your 3D BR on your flat 4K OLED?

The audio is Dolby Atmos, as it says on the box, as was the entire point of this re-release.

Still have the ~2016ish 4K OLED that also supports 3D. Still better than current TVs

Nice, yeah, I have a 2017 C7 which was the year they dropped 3D. Wouldn't matter for me though as they replaced the panel on mine for burn-in in 2022 and the replacements don't do 3D even for older models that supported it. I also have a 2021 G1 and 2025 C5 and agree, it is amazing how well those older models still look. I am impressed though that yours doesn't have burn-in. I was relatively careful (former plasma owner), but still hit it at 4 years (fortunately they were running the free replacement panel program at that time).
