This LAMTTO box turns a wired CarPlay or Android Auto head unit into a wireless system with built in Android, streaming apps, and screen mirroring. It stands out for video playback and extra app access, with YouTube and Netflix working for some setups and the interface feeling more capable than basic wireless dongles. Setup can be slow, though, and several reports call out lag, heat, and occasional crashes. Compatibility also looks picky, especially around wired versus wireless CarPlay, hotspot use, and getting streaming apps online.

Common Questions (5)

  • It can run very hot and may throttle or crash under load, especially in smaller-profile designs. Performance is also reported as slow or sluggish for video and app use, though it is still considered more capable than cheaper $20-$30 dongles.

  • Yes, it has built-in Android apps and can display streaming apps on the head unit when the phone hotspot is enabled. Video playback can be sluggish, and some users report YouTube or other apps failing with a no-internet error.

  • It is meant for a wired head unit that already supports CarPlay or Android Auto, and it converts that connection to wireless while adding streaming features. It does not solve a car that already has only wireless CarPlay and no wired input.

  • Wireless CarPlay uses Wi‑Fi, so hotspotting from the same phone can be blocked while the adapter is connected. A workaround is a dual-WiFi setup or a unit with built-in GPS, otherwise you may need to reconnect the hotspot manually when switching out of CarPlay.

  • It typically connects through Apple CarPlay first, then Android Auto can be opened from the home screen. Switching to Android Auto mode takes longer and still requires an extra tap, so it does not boot straight into Android Auto.

I bought a different model that was on here a week or two ago. It doesn't have Gemini built in and I kind of wish it did. My car has wireless CarPlay already but I bought it for Netflix and YouTube. It works surprisingly well, it's just longer to boot than the stock system so I wound up disconnecting it until I want to stream videos.

Every written review is a "Vine Customer Review of Free Product." Seems to work by mimicking a iPhone to your existing CarPlay system, allowing the Magic Box to display whatever it wants on the CarPlay screen. But there are no reviews that are helpful and actually show what it does. One review has a 2:25 long video which has some guy hovering the camera over the product while basically reading marketing copy, no time showing the product working.
UPDATE Another similar product from same manufacturer has better comments: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0GX9ZQ4RD

I don't understand what this does. Would this add CarPlay to an older vehicle (with touchscreen) that doesn't have it built in?

Seems interesting. I have a Motorola dongle that does this but tends go cut out in some places when driving around. This is cheaper than that one and seems to do a lot more stuff.
I'll give it a try and see how it does.

you wont find ones that allow you to stream video and mirror your phone. i have a 10$ one that i got off woot that is just fine but i love the idea of streaming video on my head unit and considering this. its the best price for one like this i have seen.

Heads up: This design is marketed under a number of different brands and they all have the same fatal flaw: They get EXTREMELY HOT.

We're talking hot enough to cause 1st degree burns. The thermals on it are so bad that the heat transfers through the cable. When this happens, the unit will throttle under the most minimal load, causing it to become unusable or even crash. If you're going to spend this much on an Android car box, get one that has a larger profile for better thermals.

Or, you can get an Ottocast TV Mate Max for $74.

This doesn't have Android OS built in. Instead, it mirrors your phone screen or anything you plug into the HDMI port.

The upside to this is the interface will be as fast as your phone can handle. The downside is Android Auto/Carplay is a secondary function unless you use something like Headunit Reloaded (Android only) to emulate Android Auto while mirroring your screen.

However, mirroring is the only way to have access to all of your apps on your car screen.

This works pretty well for me. My car has wired AA/Carplay and this seamlessly makes it wireless. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0FP2L3...in_title_3 I've seen other dongles that probably work as well for under $10.

I was about to order but then I realized this requires wired Apple CarPlay to work. Unfortunately my car only has wireless Apple CarPlay and no Android Auto so once again I'm screwed.
