Ito En Oi Ocha is a bottled unsweetened green tea that stands out for its clean, familiar Japanese tea flavor and convenience. The taste is described as good for what it is, and the brand is widely seen in Japan vending machines, which fits its everyday-drink appeal. The main drawbacks are the heavy plastic packaging and tea bags that are not biodegradable or compostable, with concerns about nylon bags and microplastics. The flavor also takes some getting used to for those expecting a sweeter or milder tea, making it a practical pick if the taste profile already suits you.
Common Questions (4)
It's an unsweetened green tea with a flavor some find good for what it is, but it can taste unfamiliar if you're used to sweeter teas. Descriptions range from "dirty tap water" or "paper bag juice" to "delicious" after getting used to real green tea.
The tea bags are reported to be nylon/plastic rather than biodegradable or compostable. That makes them a concern for home use if you want to avoid microplastics and extra plastic waste.
Costco's Kirkland Green Tea is made by Ito En and comes in packets, with about $12 for 100 packets. One bag steeped in 8 oz of water gives a similar tea at a fraction of the cost.
The 30-second steep time is called out as unusually short, which may be because it's designed for a lighter bottled-tea style flavor. If you prefer a stronger cup, that short steep may feel limiting.
