Because it is no where near the performance of a desktop 5090

It's alright. I got mine with 64GB for $3200. This is close enough at $2999 with 32GB less. Legion which I think is one of the better laptops for 5090, same 16 size, OLED also. 285HX? I don't remember the exactly intel cpu with so many numbers to remember. lol

It's not worth it IMO, I regret buying it, it's too under powered and I can't get it outside since it is 400w power hungry at full load. battery does not last lol.

I don't recommend laptops at all for GPU use - maybe just games.

But what I have is the Lenovo 16" Legion Pro 7i Gaming Laptop. 64GB/5090 laptop gpu. I don't play games on it, you can't bring any of the fast gaming laptop out with you, drains battery, very heavy with the brick! like 7-8 lbs at least I think. I didn't weight it but it felt far heavier than my old 16" MacBook Pro + the brick.
I am not a heavy gamer and have been looking at ASUS ROG 14 inch, but the ones I like are all in the $2k range. Ryzen AI or Intel 9, 32GB, 5070 ti, 1TB SSD, all aluminum chassis, solid speaker, OLED, and most important all under 3.5lbs. I have seem comparable legion around $1.4K but i hear they are not as sturdy as ASUS. Caught between YOLO and trying to save $600..lol

I got the 32gb 4090 version for $3050 and regret not waiting for 64gb version.. depends on what you do, for my purpose, this still the best priced 24gb vram computer I can get that is brand new. I came from a dell 7550 with a 16gb vram RTX quadro 5000 card. Both ComfyUI and ollama is much faster on this mobile 5090 card.
Oh nice! My fellow brother AI users of Comfyui -- I do use LM Studio now instead of Ollama. 24GB is great for comfyui too.

btw, I was able to run DiffusionGemma 27B model. I smoked it for 95 tokens per second or around 270% normal max speed! It wasn't perfect and a bit buggy with Unsloth studio but you gotta look it up. SUPER FAST with the new diffusion tech.

theoretic speed for a 27B would on a 5090 laptop would have been 900GB/s memory bandwidth / 27 = 33 tokens per second. I got 95 tgs

my 5090 desktop normal LLM inference would have been 56 tokens per second for more context. I got desktop 5090 up to around 160 tokens per second. 160 is not as fast as say a 35B MoE Qwen but we're really testing the promise if other providers use diffusion tech, we are for 200-300% speed increase. 35B MoD is about 230 tgs now, imagine if I can hit 500+ in the future. so hot!

I need to get VLLM working, that's supposed to be the best I think.

I got a permanent desktop 5080 today. If you can get another machine, the desktop 5080 will run comfyui much faster (vram not withstanding but you can use GGUF modesl and run as low as 8GB VRAM). Laptop 5090 will just do just fine though if you don't mind waiting but you will want 64GB RAM if you are gonna try LTX video.

I was load balancing 2 x desktop 5090 and my laptop 5090 on generations when I am lazy and just fire off ton of clips and review how the scenes came out later. lol

I don't know all of those models but if you can get...

64GB in a Ryzen AI chip and it comes with a 5070 TI (12GB VRAM), that would be a great combo to run fairly fast AI on smaller models and you can do some image/video generations off of NVidia and use Ryzen to handle larger LLMs (mapped system RAM to 75% VRAM or around 48GB for LLM -- not super fast but at least you can run stuff that the 5070 TI cannot handle.

I am biased toward using Nvidia for anything AI related and 24GB VRAM is the kind for laptop right now but it is $3000+ a laptop which is a hard pill to swallow.

I don't play games so no idea on game play and battery like. I just know my 5090 laptop is huge and battery drain so I will never carry it out to a cafe.

I pretty much just remote access it where it sits on my desk as a fancy 16" screen showing me Performance monitor and comfyui screens lol

I should at least run youtube on it if I'm at my desk but I am used to using an ipad where I can touch the screen! I know I know. first world problems!

More TDP (600w peak reserved if you have a desktop and they want 1200w PSU to be on the safe size), a ton more CUDA cores, 32GB VRAM instead of 24GB, crazy memory bandwidth difference 1700GB/s vs ~896 GB/s.

google on cuda cores

RTX 5090 Laptop GPU: 10,496 CUDA cores
RTX 5090 Desktop GPU: 21,760 CUDA cores

I think 5070 desktop is just shy of 8000 but it's about the same processing speed as a laptop 5090 people said.
What is on the slow laptop 5090.

That's why desktop 5090 GPU alone is $4000+
This argument has been around since the Pentium II vs. AMD days. AMD was often half the price back then too, and the real question was never which one is faster. It was whether the extra speed is worth the extra money for what you actually do.
Yes, a desktop RTX 5090 will crush the mobile version. A 10-minute 4K render on the desktop could easily be 20+ minutes on the laptop, depending on effects, encoding, cooling, and power limits. But that does not mean the laptop is weak.
A 5090 laptop is still enough to run local AI models, edit 4K video, and play just about anything at 2K max settings for years to come. You are buying portability, not trying to win a benchmark war with a desktop.
I have a Helios with a 4080, and it still handles everything I need from the couch. My only real complaint is the DC power jack and the audio sucks. Mine needed repair after a couple of years, so support the power connector with a laptop pad or stand unless you enjoy resoldering a better jack from DigiKey later.
