Always check with your electric company before buying a smart thermostat. They often give them for free or at a steep discount. Maybe even a better brand like Ecobee.

This is a great deal until Google decides to EOL your perfectly good thermostat. Instead, consider the Ecobee. You shouldn't have to think about your wall thermostat. It should just work with Google, Alexa, AND homekit. (like the ecobee does).

Just to be fair... this iteration they finally went with standard Matter, and it works with those integrations.
The older ones? Private APIs? Yes, I'm not so sure...

Like somebody else said you can go to your energy company or your gas company and go to their website and buy these for like $29. I think I paid sometimes they are free sometimes they are $49. It depends on what deal they have at the time.

Just curious, why did you hate it? I've heard similar complaints from others but hadn't seen further details on why

Not intuitive, and I found no difference in my energy bills. Then, when I had problems, it was impossible to diagnose. I switched back to a simple Honeywell temperature controller and have been VERY happy. Super reliable. I literally threw the Nest away.

Part of what I do for living - installing it. Someone ended up with 1200$ bill because he don't want to replace batteries so I had to replace old cat5 wire all way from basement to 3rd floor with gauge18. Also I had to basically scrap all the existing wiring and start over. Nest is good if everything is perfect, but even if you get this 24v on C it will scream at you and won't charge if the resistance not matching. Anyway - ecobee is way better and also this wiring technology is from the age of black and white TV that your grandpa had to call all his friend to carry.... (im clearly working on using esp32 + smart screens to replace this)
