Community Reviews
BowFlex SelectTech dumbbells are a familiar adjustable set that now uses metal parts instead of the older plastic discs, which makes the design feel sturdier than many similar adjustable dumbbells. The newer version is otherwise the same, with the SelectTech 52 adding a slightly longer, more uniform weight shape. The main drawback is the recall history and the limited replacement or refund path tied to older purchases. For shoppers focused on the current build, they remain a practical adjustable option, though not the most compact one.
Home lifters wanting a compact adjustable set for frequent workouts, because the updated metal parts are described as more durable than plastic-disc alternatives.
Buyers comparing adjustable dumbbells on a budget, because these are described as decent and cheaper than many similar options while still offering a familiar adjustment system.
People who prefer a uniform weight shape in a longer adjustable dumbbell, because the newer 52 version keeps the same size plates and changes the shape slightly.
Buyers who need a simple return-free purchase history, because the recall process depends on having the right purchase date and receipt.
People who want a set with a long track record of trouble-free ownership, because these have had a recall tied to weights falling out.
Shoppers who want a shorter adjustable dumbbell, because the handle is already long and the newer 52 version is 1.5 inches longer.

To those that care the new dumbbell are identical to the old ones just with metal discs now. Having metal instead of plastic that can wear or break should make them less prone to the weights falling out.

Long story short, this means that the new owner is screwing their past customers...so it's best to avoid that brand altogether for now on. Johnson Health Tech also now owns Schwinn branded products, so I'd avoid those too.
The 4-15-24 cutoff is tied to the bankruptcy of the prior owner of Bowflex (Nautilus, Inc) and the new owner (Johnson Health Tech, a Taiwan based firm). The new owner is legally obligated to offer replacement as of when they took ownership of the brand. They get away with screwing customers who purchased the dumbells prior to their purchase of the brand, which is why they are getting away with offering a $20-$60 payoff. It's reasonable to assume that they knew of the issue prior to purchasing the brand...so it's not like the recall came as a surprise to them.
