BowFlex SelectTech dumbbells are a familiar adjustable set that now uses metal parts instead of the older plastic discs, which makes the design feel sturdier than many similar adjustable dumbbells. The newer version is otherwise the same, with the SelectTech 52 adding a slightly longer, more uniform weight shape. The main drawback is the recall history and the limited replacement or refund path tied to older purchases. For shoppers focused on the current build, they remain a practical adjustable option, though not the most compact one.

Common Questions (4)

  • The newer version replaces the plastic disc on the handle with metal parts; everything else is the same. The metal pieces should be less prone to wear than the old plastic discs that could break or let weights fall out.

  • The recall replacement is only straightforward if the dumbbells were bought after 4/15/2024 and you still have the receipt, in which case you can get replacement dumbbells or a full refund. Older purchases were handled with a pro-rated payout that was reported as $20 to $60.

  • These BowFlex dumbbells are described as decent, especially now that they use metal parts instead of plastic discs. PowerBlock EXP is presented as the stronger budget alternative: all-metal, more compact at lower weights, expandable, and often around $250 on sale for 50 lb with a $130 stage-2 expansion to 70 lb.

  • The SelectTech 52 uses the same basic system but has a slightly different shape and is about 1.5 inches longer. Its weights are more uniform in size, but the handle is already considered long.

Looking to get one, what's the difference between 52 and 552? I wish they came in lower capacity for begineers.
Just a slightly different shape. The 52 are 1.5 inches longer, and the dumbbell is already too long. The weights are more uniform though, all the same size. I put a little write up on Reddit 2 months ago.

So if you bought them used off of fb marketplace then you're out of luck with recall right?
Yep, only way to truly take advantage of the recall is to have bought after 4/15/2024 and still have the receipt. Otherwise doing the recall is a waste.

Bowflex is known a a brand that makes defective products that cause injuries and do not stand by their product. Even if feee this is a rip off. The executives should be hauled to prison to rot
What adj dumbbells do you recommend instead?

After Bowflex (Nautilus) went bankrupt, Johnson Health purchased their assets. They did not purchase their liabilities or the actual company. Johnson did not make the faulty dumbbells, and also did not profit from the sale of the faulty dumbbells. Why you are holding Johnson Health responsible for Nautilus bad manufacturing is beyond me. I don't see how the new owner is screwing over the past customers, its not their responsibility.
Johnson knew of the faulty dumbbells (these types of recalls are the product of months, if not years, of planning and negotiations) and I'm sure that they priced the cost of adhering to the terms of the agreement when negotiating the purchase price of the brand. They could of offered more reasonable terms to their customers, but chose not to.

Johnson definitely knew of the faulty dumbbells. There is no "adhering to the terms of the agreement". There was no agreement when buying the company to do a recall or to compensate anyone. Johnstone bought the assets not the liabilities. Johnstone covered any dumbbells after they bought the company because they are liable for those and don't want to get sued. But anything prior was not their responsibility, and as a business they didn't want to lose a lot of money for a company they just bought in bankruptcy.
I feel badly that people got $20-$60 for their old dumbbells, but they never should have sent them in without knowing the pro-rated amount. People just made up in their head that they would be getting back hundreds of dollars. I read the recall page by page and knew based on the date I bought mine and having the receipt I would get new dumbbells. Otherwise I would not have taken a gamble of sending mine in.

These are decent dumbbells. Now with the metal parts these are better than a lot of similar adjustable dumbbells out there with similar in design. These are better than Walmart FitRX which have plastic discs. Same with a bunch of Amazon dumbbells.
For a low price, before you start getting into much more expensive ones I am a fan of the Powerblock EXP. They go on sale on Woot some times. Very different system to adjust but built of all metal. Almost indestructible. Compact at smaller weights vs these long Bowflex handles. Around $250 on sale (50lbs), and then you can get the stage 2 expansion for an additional $130. So for around $380 you can have 70lb adjustable dumbbells. That would be my budget pick.
