BowFlex SelectTech dumbbells are a familiar adjustable set that now uses metal parts instead of the older plastic discs, which makes the design feel sturdier than many similar adjustable dumbbells. The newer version is otherwise the same, with the SelectTech 52 adding a slightly longer, more uniform weight shape. The main drawback is the recall history and the limited replacement or refund path tied to older purchases. For shoppers focused on the current build, they remain a practical adjustable option, though not the most compact one.
The newer model replaces the handle plastic disc with metal parts.
PowerBlock EXP on Woot reportedly offers an all-metal, compact alternative at a lower sale price.
The recall replacement dumbbells reportedly use metal components that may reduce weights falling out.
The dumbbells reportedly can be used almost daily after recall replacements without issues.
The recall reportedly provides new dumbbells or refunds only when purchases are after 4/15/2024 with receipts.
The recall compensation reportedly offered only a $20 certificate after returning a set.
The pro-rated recall amount reportedly ranged as low as $20 for some purchases.
The SelectTech 52 dumbbells reportedly run about 1.5 inches longer and can feel too long.

To those that care the new dumbbell are identical to the old ones just with metal discs now. Having metal instead of plastic that can wear or break should make them less prone to the weights falling out.

Long story short, this means that the new owner is screwing their past customers...so it's best to avoid that brand altogether for now on. Johnson Health Tech also now owns Schwinn branded products, so I'd avoid those too.
The 4-15-24 cutoff is tied to the bankruptcy of the prior owner of Bowflex (Nautilus, Inc) and the new owner (Johnson Health Tech, a Taiwan based firm). The new owner is legally obligated to offer replacement as of when they took ownership of the brand. They get away with screwing customers who purchased the dumbells prior to their purchase of the brand, which is why they are getting away with offering a $20-$60 payoff. It's reasonable to assume that they knew of the issue prior to purchasing the brand...so it's not like the recall came as a surprise to them.
