This ThinkPad P16 Gen 3 is a workstation built for heavy graphics, CAD, and AI workloads, with a tandem OLED touch display, RTX PRO 5000, and up to 192GB of RAM. The comments also frame it as capable for everyday browsing and future proofing, while noting the machine is heavy. Main concerns center on value at this price, with the GPU and CPU seen as closer to lower priced options than the sticker suggests. There are also hardware caveats around only one HDMI port, possible RAM spec mismatches, and OLED brightness or dock related issues if Intel graphics are disabled.

  • CAD and engineering professionals who need ISV certification, because that support matters for regulated rendering and simulation workflows.

  • Developers running large local LLMs with long contexts, because 192GB of RAM can support bigger models that need huge memory capacity.

  • Office workers living in web apps and email, because it handles Gmail, YouTube, and general browsing well.

  • Power users who want a workstation with upgradeable memory, because the four user-replaceable SODIMM slots support up to 192GB.

  • Gamers or AI hobbyists who do not need ISV certification, because the RTX PRO 5000 commands a huge premium without proportional value.

  • Travelers carrying a laptop all day, because it is a bit on the heavy side.

  • Multi-monitor desk setups, because it has only one HDMI port.

  • Buyers expecting the tandem OLED to stay bright after disabling Intel graphics, because the screen can lock into a dim setting.

I'm not sure others have already mentioned that there is no sub-space that exists within the fabric of this reality where this laptop is worth nearly seven-thousand-dollars.

This is an RTX 5090 laptop with some different branding and ECC mode enabled by default for the video memory. The CPU is the same you'll find in most $1500 laptops, and even with storage and memory prices being 3x what they were a year ago it doesn't take this machine from the already absurdly inflated $3000 price point of a 5090 laptop all the way up to $7000 and beyond. Not even the tandem OLED display comes close to evening the odds.
No one should be buying these machines at these prices.

The ISV certification is worth it to those who are in fields that demand it (CAD for rendering buildings, cars, civil engineering stuff, fluid dynamics)...but those people will never pay for that stuff on their own, let alone endure the opportunity cost of waiting for a deal on this stuff. Hence, their moot loss is eventually your gain when this stuff is sold for pennies on the dollar 3-4 years later once the leases end.

I had a W520, a P53, and my current P15 Gen 1. All procured this way (except the P15). Dont tell anyone... Mad

Why would they add 4,000 mt ram memory speed? This feels like they are packaging some reject memory and then add a sweet deal. Them you would buy your own ram again with the mid/upper level tier....

I followed the link. It says...

Memory
128 GB DDR5-4000MT/s (SODIMM)(4 x 32 GB)
This is true. The laptop is listed as 128GB RAM, not 192GB. Kills the deal for sure!

This laptop is worth more than my car.
This laptop costs more than your car, but certainly is not worth more...in normal times, this laptop might be half this price.

Crazy as the price feels, it's the inflation adjusted equivalent of a $2,999 computer in 1999. That was a high end price at the time but not absurdly so for a laptop.

Foolish time to buy a computer. Referring to AI frenzy. Wait till 2028 the earliest.

August 1995 - $3499 plus tax - Micron Millennia P133, 16mb EDO, 1.2gb HDD, 14.4 voice modem, 17 inch monitor, full tower, Diamond Stealth 64, sound blaster VL64.

Loved playing the sims, AOE, and eventually the first starcraft...the RAM was the first to need upgrading...and back then, Costco (Price Costco at the time) sold 32Meg sticks for like $100...got two of them...and holy shit...80 megs of RAM in 1996 was epic.
