Red Rising is a fast, addictive sci fi series that shines most in the first three books, with book 3 often standing out and ending on a natural note rather than a cliffhanger. The full cast audiobook version is praised as especially strong, and the box set also appeals as a display piece. Later books shift perspectives more often, and book 4 starts 10 years later, which makes the series harder to follow for some readers. The later stretch also draws criticism for weaker plotting and a drop in character consistency, so it works best if you want the early trilogy most.
Readers who want a fast-moving sci-fi series with a strong payoff in the first three books, because book 3 has a natural ending and the early books are repeatedly called the best.
It can be suitable for a 14-year-old, but it includes rape, sodomy, murder, revolution, and maiming. That makes it a better fit for a mature teen than for a younger reader.
Book 4 is where the switching perspectives becomes harder for some readers, and Book 5 continues that pattern but with longer stretches of the same perspective, often 3-4 chapters in a row. If perspective shifts bother you, the later books may be tougher to follow.
The full-cast Audible versions of the first three books are highly recommended and described as glorious. They are a strong option if you prefer listening over reading.
I did the first 3 books on Audible with the full cast and it was glorious. I haven't jumped into the next three yet since i'm working on Dungeon Crawler Carl. I did buy the special edition of the first book to display and i've been tempted to get this as well, but it's been this price for awhile so no rush. For audible listeners I highly recommend the full cast version, they are really good.
I recently got into audiobooks—starting with Project Hail Mary, which my wife recommended—and now I'm completely hooked. Right now, I'm listening to Morning Star (the third book) through Hoopla via my local library. It's fantastic, completely free, and has actually made my morning commutes enjoyable for a change!
I think for me I'd say 2 then 3 then 1. It's pretty close between 2 and 3 though. I'm on 4 now and having a really hard time with the switching perspectives. Trying to push through.

I had the same problem with book 4. Book 5 is the same way BUT it switches less. 3-4 chapters in a row as same perspective.
Would this be good as a series for a 14 year old? For anyone who has read it.
Well I think it would be good for a 14 year old. Touchy topics: Rape, sodomy? murder, revolution, maiming. There are no topics in here that don't happen in the good book.
