I've read 1-4 twice. I get to book 5 and it's terrible. Twice. Never made it through.
I never realized that's what I likely dislike about Books 4 and 5. I thought the original trilogy was fantastic and I loved ASOFAI so I thought I would like the changing perspectives, but it does seem like it's not handled as well as when GRRM does it.

I don't mind the changing perspectives. I mind that the MC suffers a severe IQ drop about a third of the way through the fifth book, as the author tries to manufacture drama. I can deal with a stupid character being stupid. I can deal with a smart character making a mistake. I cannot deal with a smart character who suddenly no longer is a smart character at all and just an idiot in tight pants. And yes, the first three books are the best. You are right. Also, GRRM is no fantastic writer. He's fun, and I read most of his work long before the TV show got popular, but he's more Piers Anthony than anything.

This is one of the best series I read. Highly recommended, you won't regret it.

The author is working on book 7 now, but the first 3 books were the best and book 3 doesn't end on a cliffhanger but has good natural end. Book 4 picks up 10 years later.

Books 4 and 5 weren't nearly as good, but I'm almost finished with book 6 now and its excellent as well.

It's a fun and addictive series. But it does have a few plot holes and most of the plot twists are just the narrative leaving you in the dark and misleading you. Other than that I did enjoy it though.

I used to love Piers Antony as a kid so that explains a lot haha

I loves Piers too, as an ignorant kid, but he was not a fantastic writer, and he often wrote rape fantasies.

Yeah.... Looking back now, it is very cringe worthy and I can see the parallels with some of GRRM's more egregious writing of women in ASOIAF. I do think he is talented though. Windriders was good and I want to read more of his short stories. What do you recommend for fun, but non-rapey fantasy?
