Buying an antivirus in 2026 is wild, but to each their own.
Folks if you do end up buying this please, PLEASE use the online account norton will have you create to remove your credit card information from said account.. norton will force you to enter your credit card info hoping that you will forget to do so then bill you some nightmarishly high amount for "auto renewal" when you forget to cancel before the year's subscription is up. Despite it being described as "auto renewing" in the product description I've always been able to remove the credit card number Norton forces you to enter (turn off the auto renew option first, then remove the credit card info from your account again you can do this online without speaking to a Norton customer service agent) and Norton still works just fine even afterwards.
And yes Norton does use a slimy "scare the customer tactic" in terms of annoying "buy this additional security feature from norton or you're doomed" pop-ups that will still occur (just not as often) even if you tell Norton in the settings not to do this. I just exit out of and otherwise ignore the "buy this too" pop ups but I can see how people would be absolutely enraged to have to deal with this given that they're paying for Norton but it's something to be aware of too if you're new to Norton (don't fall for their scare tactics basically).
It's no surprise that posting this deal resulted in the raging "You don't need no stinking Norton" debate

Got this from a slick deal in 2025 on Amazon for 21.00
Cancelled Near the end of that subscription and they gave me a free 6 months
That extended subscription ends next month

Defender is better than nothing (most of the time), but it's not better than a dedicated (paid) commercial solution. a) it's not MS's primary focus, b) you're putting yourself in the bucket of everyone else using it, i.e. what the hackers are most likely to test against. c) just last week there was a vulnerability found in Defender (https://www.helpnetsecu
Norton also has an outbound firewall to block suspicious outbound connections, which can be a huge benefit in protecting you if you do get compromised. They also flag infected sites, stopping you from visiting them. They used to have an amazing feature i think was called File Insights (PC only, but I'm on mac, so not sure if it's still there), which let you know how many other people had the same file- not a guarantee something is safe, but if you download popular software and only a few others have it, it's a good flag to pay attention that something might not be quite right.
I don't use their other features, so can't speak to those.
Granted, if you make a habit of downloading random software from the internet and don't update your system consistently, AV won't be a magic bullet. It's just one layer to protecting your system.
not great. all the additional features are behind a paywall so you have to pay even more. not worth the cost
