It's completely optional and not required. You'll still receive the same motion alerts and video recordings without it. The only difference is that the notification won't specify what triggered the alert. Best of all, there is no subscription required to continue receiving motion alerts and video clips.
The only drawback is that with the local storage you cannot record while also viewing live. You can with a subscription. That being said I don't always look at my cameras and if I do I can just screen capture on my phone live.
Way better than the other deal of 2 cameras for 28 plus the 50 for the module 2 if you want offline playback.
