This AstroAI multimeter is a handy low cost bench and backup meter for home DIY, battery checks, and basic troubleshooting. Auto ranging, max and hold, and the audible beep make quick testing easier, and the meter has been used successfully for AC diagnosis and toy battery troubleshooting. It is also described as rugged enough for everyday use. The main limits are that it is not the right choice for commercial work, and current measurement can be awkward without extra setup. Replacement leads for cheap meters can also be a weak point.

  • The multimeter can help diagnose AC problems when a meter gives strange readings.

  • The audible beep feature supports hands-free testing during everyday troubleshooting.

  • The meter can test batteries by measuring voltage across the battery terminals.

  • The meter can serve as a practical backup unit for occasional work around the home.

  • The test leads can break off after only a few uses, making replacement costly.

  • Current measurements may require extra tools like a line splitter or clamp setup.

  • Safety and reading trust concerns can arise when users worry about electrocution or unreliable measurements.

  • The meter may be less suitable for commercial applications where higher expectations apply.

I don't know why people always suggest clamp meters when regular ones are posted. I have a clamp meter, used it once. Compared to regular meters they are bulky in a bag and bulky on a workbench. I took the battery out of mine so there is no corrosion and use all the other regular meters I have instead.
because you gain the ability to read amperage without interrupting circuits. People looking at this are either buying their first meter so it is a learning opportunity for them, or they already have one in which case this one would likely not be an upgrade, and honestly the type of people who would downvote the idea probably need to improve their diagnostic skillset to include load testing. Completely ignoring the auto ranging comment too.

It was simply considerations for people, if you want the $10 manual meter go for it but I bought two of the MK4OR for $10 last go around so i mean you're not getting much with this one at this price. If this is genuinely your bench meter... maybe less criticism

For those who already own one, is there any reason to spend more than this for basic home use?
auto ranging for the convenience and also takes the first step out of your diag process and allows you to focus on the task at hand. silly argument. depends on your house stuff, having a min function might be handy. beats the harbor freight meter because it has max and hold. having a thermal probe could be handy.

if $10 is your price point this will get the job done nicer than the $7hf one but that's where my original post comes in, few pesos more you can get a bit more functionality. but then the "i only understand volts" guys roll up.

I did not downvote you. Still think that people who are looking at a sub $10 multimeter either basically never use it or want it as a back up in a work bag etc. Measuring amperage with a clamp meter is such a pain, needing to separate hot and neutral, but granted, still easier than tapping into it. Most people here probably don't realize that they will need a line splitter etc.

I know its $20 instead of $10 and that's a thing for slickdeals but amp clamp and auto ranging

$30 temp probe and DC amp clamp reading instead of AC only

Non contact voltage testing. Sweet. Returning the pen and the multimeter I just got yesterday. 🤣

That's kinda my point though. Not everyone needs all the extra features for stuff around the house.

I own this exact one and used it today. I am old and this replaced one without beep and light, the beep is awsome when you don't have a 3rd hand. I was trying to fix a toy that batteries blew up. I tested volts accross the battery. I was getting the correct voltage so the corrosion got inside.

I know that it's obvious from the photos, but this uses a 9V battery and AAAs like their other models.

I do a lot of DIY Solar stuff --I use my amp meter several times a day ... in fact one of my meters I have hanging off the main circuit breaker box to see the amp draw coming into the house ...

I bought 2 of these cheap DMMs at HBF, and the cords are keep breaking off after using them for couple times to measure household batteries and car batteries. Buying the replacement cords which costs almost the same as buying the new cheap DMM. Are these DMM better those sold at HBF?
