Mine was close to mint condition/pristine except a few minor scuffs in various places on the outer shell. 96% battery health with original box, magsafe cable, charger, manuals etc.
I quickly sold my 2017 15" MPB for $1200 (bought for $450 spring 2019) December 2020 right after the M1 Air and 13" M1 Pro were released. it was coming up on 4 years old and Apple laid out the future for their PC's that M-series chips were the future and there weren't many downsides.
Apple devices hold their value, they're premium products and sell for premium prices. Even if they're used and a few years old they still continue to sell for a premium.
iPhones still sell for significantly higher prices than Samsung Galaxy's and Pixels. 2 year old IP 15 Pro Max is around $550-$650 depending on condition and storage Gb.
If you buy used at a good price, you'll rarely lose much - if any money.
I've actually made profits on buying Apple products used and selling used years after I've owned them. Just have to be patient and wait for the right desperate seller that needs quick $ and swoop in and get an excellent deal.

And this is a M1 Pro, not a Max. So your al-slop inference doesn't even apply.
Today the identical drive is over $400.
Eventually, increased production capacity (need to build factories) and supply/demand will lower prices...question is when!

Luckily these don't have the TouchBar in place of the F Keys. I have a 2020 MacBook Pro with the non-Pro chip. I only got 3 years out of it due to the screen going it on but it appears the backlight went out, I've always gotten 6-8 years out of my MacBooks. It was going to cost north $600 to replace. Some have called have it "Flexgate" an issue in MacBook Pro models, particularly those from 2016 to 2018, is caused by a defective flex cable that can lead to display problems such as flickering or a dim screen. . I should jut sell it for parts but it does work fine with an external monitor. As many as these as I've found out people had issues with I was hoping Apple might do something about it but they have not. I bought it new as a couple year old model and it did everything I needed to do with it but it only had 8Gb of RAM and a 256Gb HD and had no desire to buy another you but had too. I replaced it with a 2024 MacBook Pro M4 non-Pro again with 16Gb of RAM and 500Gb HD and it never bats an eye no matter what I'm doing.
