If you have total tech at Best Buy, get them to price match and you'll get free AppleCare.

About 15 minutes ago Amazon just price-matched all colors at $399 as well. So, if you got a Prime Visa that's an even better option with the 5-6% cash back.

AirPods Max 2 are premium over ear headphones that stand out for strong sound, excellent Spatial Audio, and very effective noise cancelling, especially for Apple devices. The H2 chip and USB C update are treated as meaningful upgrades, and the tuning is described as more V shaped than the original Max. The main knocks are the heavy weight, weak Android support, and Apple quirks like the bra case, no power off button, and no IPX rating. At $399, it lands as a solid Apple focused option if those tradeoffs do not bother you.

Common Questions (5)

  • At $399, the AirPods Max 2 is framed as a strong Apple-priced deal, especially with the H2 chip and improved features. The main tradeoffs are weight, battery life, and a less practical case, while Sony XM5 and Bose QC models can be cheaper alternatives.

  • Amazon did price-match all colors to $399, and the deal can be even better with a Prime Visa because of the extra cash back. In some cases, though, Amazon refused to price match within the return window, so the match may depend on timing and rep response.

  • They are reported to have poor support on Android phones. They make the most sense for Apple users, where pairing and ecosystem convenience are a bigger advantage.

  • With Total Tech at Best Buy, a price match can reportedly come with free AppleCare. The catch is that the AppleCare benefit lasts only while the Total Tech subscription is active.

    General_Klingernghiale2016

  • Yes. The AirPods Max 2 is described as having a more V-shaped out-of-box tuning, while the original AirPods Max is more neutral. That makes the newer model a better fit if you prefer a more lively sound signature over a flatter one.

I did. I'm returning right away. Amazon refused to do price match
It's so crazy they won't price match within the return window like everyone else... But that level of friction must save them millions of dollars a year. I'm cheap, but even I won't re-buy and return unless I'm getting back at least $50-100 for the hassle. Funny enough, one of their reps once told me over the phone to buy the cheaper item and ship the more expensive one back. I was surprised she actually told me that (and yeah, I was gonna anyhow lol).

Yeah, just a spec bump up to the H2 chip, which does bring some much-needed features to make these at least on par with AirPods Pro 2 and 3 buds. That spec bump last year, and the addition of a number 2, brought these back up to MSRP of $549.00 even on Amazon. To be fair, this newest variant hasn't hit the $399.00 mark until yesterday. The previous Gen 1 USB-C AirPods Max, and the original Lightning AirPods Max, all eventually hit $399.00 pricing on Amazon and Walmart's bigger sales a couple of times per year. So, if you're into these (the latest AirPods Max 2) this is reasonably the best price you will find for new ones until after they are discontinued.

I just want an off switch and a functional case. Hell, I'd take an off switch and NO case and buy a chinesium one off of Amazon instead lol. The "bra" is ridiculous.

Why is an off switch so important? I'm being serious here. There's no off switch for AirPod pros or other similar ear buds. Why are these any different? I have the v1 and they power down when I stop listening. On standby mode it's known to last like a month. I just don't get the compliant of needing an off button.

Compared to the Sony XM5s (which I also own) these are noticeably heavier and the battery life is not as good. They are also harder to wear for as long as the Sony's. But I still use these much more often because I own Apple everything, and whatever device I'm on I can just pick these up and use them. And they sound great.

Because unlike earbuds, many people like to just take their over ear headphones off and set them on their desk or night stand etc. in between use. Putting the AirPods Pros back in their case keeps their charge topped off (as they have much shorter battery life in the buds themselves than the AirPods Max has) and this also keeps safely together. Most people would not leave earbuds sitting around out of their case for fear of losing them. I don't personally like how I have to grab "the bra" case every time just to immediately power down my AirPod Max headphones if I know for sure I'm not going to use them for a few hours, the rest of the day or for a few days. If you don't do this, you will waste some battery life until they go into their deep sleep mode (Which Apple did to their credit add to the firmware a few years back because of these complaints). But still, the battery is burning if they're not in the bra (or a 3rd party case). Mine, and many other customers' issue with that case is that considering you need it to actually power the AirPods Max down, you'd think the case would offer some kind of protection. The "bra" fails in that regard as well which makes it double stupid for many of us.

Don't get me wrong, I am a diehard Apple fan and I give them waaaaaaaay to much of my money lol... But I can still recognize objectively bad design choices and form-over-function as well. They're still overall amazing headphones, it's just those common complaints that customers have been echoing across all THREE iterations of this product and yet Apple hasn't gotten around to it yet (and understandably so because we're all still buying the damned things lol, but I'm sure the Max is the smallest piece of their total AirPods/Beats audio sales). To each their own... This one is like the butterfly keyboard and Magic Mouse for me haha.
