This 55 inch Philips is mainly a budget 4K gaming TV that can double as a large PC display, with strong value at $218 and generally good text clarity. The refresh rate is real on some setups, with 144Hz working over HDMI 2 for 4K PC use, and the software feels solid. Brightness is better than the spec suggests, but HDR is not worth chasing because there is no local dimming and the panel can struggle with reflections and dark uniformity. HDMI 2.1 is missing, and some setups only get 144Hz at 1080p or fail to reach 120 and 144Hz at all.

Common Questions (5)

  • Yes, it can run 4K at 144Hz from a PC, and HDMI 2 is the port that worked for multiple setups. The PC also has to support 4K/144Hz; one report says 144Hz is only available at 1080p on some units, so compatibility may vary.

  • It can work well as a large gaming monitor, with good text clarity and strong value for the price. The main caveats are that HDR is not worth using, there is no local dimming, and some units may show edge light bleed or inconsistent high-refresh behavior.

  • Brightness is reported as better than the 350-nit spec suggests, and SDR gaming looks solid for the price. Black levels are acceptable for a basic LED TV, but HDR is limited by the lack of local dimming and some panels show dim spots or edge bleed.

  • It should still function as a TV without constant internet, but the Google smart-TV software may push online features and telemetry concerns remain. If privacy is a priority, the practical concern is the smart platform rather than basic display operation.

  • No, it does not have HDMI 2.1. HDMI 1 supports eARC, but the lack of HDMI 2.1 is a drawback for buyers who want full next-gen console features.

In for one, this will replace a 43" 1080p display on my pedestal arcade setup. I just added RS3 light guns and went down the Techno Parrot rabbit hole and wanted something like this so I could also use it with my racing sim rig as well.

To those that have this....what are the viewing angles like? I can't find if this is a VA or IPS screen. I was almost ready to pull the trigger on a Vizio Quantum mini-LED 55" until I saw this....

I have the 50 inch version, and it works great. Tested it with 144hz 4K from my pc l. Just make sure to use the second HDMI port and not the first. Your pc also needs to support it. It's a bit lame I overpaid by 80$( both sizes dropped in price ) , but it's an awesome tv
I ordered it, but looking at the specs on their website, it seems like maybe the 55 inch doesn't support 144 hz at 4k. HDMI ports only support 4k at 60 hz. Not sure if that's correct or not. Any thoughts?

I was looking at a TLC from Costco that might do the same thing. Both TVs say they are native 144hz or 120hz.

Good deal for what it is. But, the lack of a 2.1 hdmi is a real drawback, though it does have EArc on hdmi 1. I'm looking for good sound, decent blacks, so probably better to skip this one. But, I have another Phillips and it's more durable than other budget models.

Got mine in today. I'm a screen snob and I just had to see what 144hz panel at 218 bucks looked like and hot damn. Good ass tv for 218 bucks. It's brighter than I expected/what the specs would allude. I had no problem getting to 144hz right off the bat on hdmi 2. Haven't tried hdmi 1 or 3. There's too many different settings menus, which is just a TV thing at this point- but it mostly worked out the box. INSANE VALUE provided it lasts 2+ years. I'm using it as a part time computer monitor (I have a desk with other monitors i use during work hours/specific games) and am typing on it now and the text is good- chroma 444 subsampling and all that. Disable dynamic brightness/contrast. The brightness setting actually works fairly well but the dynamic contrast is big bad. Sound is not great, but cmon. Might be a bit of backlight lottery as I'm seeing a couple dim spots but nothing that alters the picture. Darks are supposed to be a sorespot but they seem fine for your avg run of the mill LED screen.

Overall this is a stupid good looking pc/game screen. The refresh rate is real.

is this fine as a replacement for my 2018 TCL R617 in the living room? I don't watch TV often and when I do, it's mostly YouTube videos. Pretty sure the HDMI ports in the the TCL are starting to fail..

What's the difference between this and regular TVs, where it's 60Hz versus this, and at the same price? I'm confused. This is a better deal overall, no?

This TV seems to be "bottom of the barrel" while doing just enough to get the job done 👍🏾...

FYI 144Hz only available in 1080p. Deal breaker for PC gaming

Only thing i wonder about these tvs is if they are dependent on internet to run. Really dont need applisnces snapping my data and sending it back to the company
Sorry to tell you, but if you use any device connected to the Internet, it's too late. Use a credit card - too late. Have a rewards card - too late. Purchased an airline ticket - too late. Visited a place with security cameras - too late.
