With firmware updates, Z5 is a capable camera. It's FAR exceeded by the Z5ii, but that's nearly twice the cost. It's sometimes hard to figure out where to place first-gen Nikon mirrorless, but at this price point you're not going to be sucking wind or anything. It's important to know what you'll use it for and what your budget is, but if you're looking to step into full-frame mirrorless, this is solid for the price. If you can wait and save up some more $, however, the other "ii" and "iii" offerings are far superior, esp at refurb prices

If you had a d7500, low usage to sell, what do you think would be a reasonable upgrade that might have the most value?

Z50 ii (which one would think will get at least a SMALL sale to this price this week) is better for a beginner, right?

Yes. Cheaper overall, esp lenses.

That's sort of a hard call. You're DX, not full frame, so I think the Z50ii is probably going to a huge upgrade for you and your lenses will all work with the FTZ adapter

Nikon USA currently have the Z5 Refurbished on sale for $649.95. The sale ends June 26 at midnight EST. The Z5 is very inexpensive for a full frame camera. I bought one this past December and if you understand how to use the autofocus system, it is still great to use. The Z5II is at least twice as much in comparison.

This camera is great for landscape, portraits, and vacation use. It is not recommended for fast moving subjects as the autofocus will struggle. Images are great out this camera.

For a starter kit lens, if it can be added to the budget, a used Nikkor 24-70 f4 S lens. The optics are fantastic, it's a constant aperture at F4, and be used for everyday shooting. Try to find it used in good condition for around $500.
