If you buy the used Amazon Resale version for $180 - there is a discount code (that will automatically apply) for another 15% off for a total of $153. https://a.co/d/004dbWiX

I know it's Prime Day and we should give Amazon all the rest of our money but I found this on Focus Camera for a few bucks cheaper (188.10 with coupon code FOCUS5 ) and it comes with a free powerbank. also 12% bank in rewards from one of those third party cookie tracking sites

Community Reviews

The WH-1000XM5 is a strong noise cancelling headphone for travel, with especially good airplane use and very effective ANC. The sound can improve a lot with a custom EQ preset, and the XM5 is seen as a big jump from the XM3, especially for noise cancelling. The main concern is durability, with repeated reports of hinge failures and warranty trouble. Price also matters, since Costco and resale listings have been lower than this Amazon deal. A solid travel-focused pair if the hinge risk is acceptable.

Common Questions (4)

  • Yes. Multiple comments report hinge failures on the WH-1000XM5, including repeated breaks after normal use and concerns that Sony may not honor warranty claims for broken hinges. The issue is a practical durability risk to factor in before buying.

  • The used Amazon Resale version at $180 can automatically apply a 15% checkout discount for an estimated total of $153. Other reported prices include $188.10 with coupon code FOCUS5 at Focus Camera and $150 clearance at Costco.

  • It is described as a major step up from the XM3, especially for the XM5. Another comment says the XM5 is not much of an upgrade over the XM4, so the jump is clearer from XM3 than from XM4.

  • The suggested EQ preset is 400:+2, 1K:+4, 2.5k:+9, 6.3k:+4, 16k:+9, Clear Bass:+3, and it is described as making the headphones much better. That said, one report still found the sound quality lacking even after trying multiple EQ settings.

Did they fix the hinges on this model?
I checked the most recent reviews on Amazon and it looks like people are still having issues with the hinge breaking.

If you're still using MX3s, the 4s and especially the 5s are an enormous step up.
I haven't heard that the 5s are that much of a step up from the 4s. I hear the 5s hinges are pretty iffy

I think the one in Costco comes with soft case. If you have prime membership, you can have 10% cash back and 5% for chase prime card cash back, which i think makes up the gap
What's the 10% cashback for Prime members?

My Amazon Prime is Prime Young Adults which has 5% cash back on some selected categories. Most of things I bought eligible for this kind of cash back. On Prime day, it increase to 10%

If you can find them in actually in the store - I would be amazed. People were buying these in bulk. I went to buy one last week at the last place in so cal I could find them in stock, and a guy just got there mins ahead and had 9 in his cart. Asked him if he wouldn't mind letting one go since I drove an hour to buy a pair. He said "sorry. I am going to sell them for 225 on eBay." I was like damn.

Is the one with the hinge that breaks?
Yes, absolutely. I would stay clear of thua model. There is a class action lawsuit in progress.

I have them as my main headphones and I like them a lot, but I also don't really have other over the ear headphones to compare them to other than my old XM3's. They're a must have for plane travel.
