The Legion Go S stands out as a SteamOS friendly handheld that can feel faster than Windows, with strong framerates, a great screen, and hall effect joysticks that should avoid stick drift. SteamOS installation is described as quick and easy, and the device is praised for better sleep and wake behavior once Windows is out of the way. The Z2 Go chip is framed as stronger than the Steam Deck OLED for many Steam games, though mouse driven RTS and FPS play is a weak fit. The $550 price is seen as more attractive in light of current memory pricing and Steam Deck increases, making it a solid midrange option if you want Steam gaming first.

Common Questions (5)

  • Yes. SteamOS installation is described as very easy and quick, and it can make the Legion Go S feel faster and more like a Steam Deck with a better screen and controllers. It also avoids some Windows 11 handheld annoyances like sluggish sleep and wake behavior.

  • SteamOS can provide better framerates and generally faster-feeling performance on the Legion Go S. One practical tweak is raising the Z2 Go to around 17W, which gives the chip more headroom for better performance at the cost of battery life.

  • Hibernate is reported to use far less power than sleep and can leave the battery nearly unchanged over more than a week. The tradeoff is that hibernate may increase SSD writes, so it is a convenience-versus-wear choice.

  • Yes. The Legion Go S uses hall-effect joysticks, which should not wear out in the same way as traditional sticks and are intended to avoid stick drift over time.

  • Yes. It reportedly docks well with an eGPU, including a Minisforum DEG2, making it a viable option if you want handheld play plus desktop-style graphics expansion.

I bought this during the sale on woot last month (same price). The screen is great. I went through the process first to log in with Windows first so I could activate the 3 months of Xbox Game Pass to use on my PC. Installing SteamOS on it was a very easy and quick process and I highly recommend it. Simple stuff like sleep and wake in Windows 11 is junk and you'd expect better from a gaming handheld. Everything works faster and in SteamOS this is just a steam deck with a better screen and controllers. The hall effect joysticks on the Legion Go S won't wear out and get stick drift - this happens eventually on a Steam Deck but at least they are reasonably easy to replace. $550 for this thing right now with the ram price insanity is quite a solid price.
On windows change it from sleep to hibernate and it works great. I own both a steam deck OLED and ROG Ally, I actually think windows hibernate works way better than Steam OS sleep. It barely uses any power at all. I can leave it for more than a week and there's barely any battery drain versus a dead Steam Deck for the same period.

Good tip I should have tried that. Oh well its on SteamOS now. Someone else asked where to get the instructions to install - steam provides them!

You do need a USB C thumbdrive or an adapter to get a regular USB thumbdrive to plug into a USB C port because that is what the legion go s has.

I have been doing for years in my laptops and my legion Go z1e and it works like a charm, just take a few extra seconds to wake up, and couple times my games were kinda freezed up but other than that I don't encounter as many issues aa everybody complains about sleep or s3

Hibernate degrades the SSD with excessive writes.

While there is a lot to like with this, it does seem like a hard sell over something like a ROG Ally Z1E or some of the higher-end android handhelds (with GameNative/GameHub). Better than the Z2A though, and with the steam deck price hike, there's some comparative advantage here.
