After the Steam Machine release news yesterday, I've been considering doing a Mini PC instead. I put this together with the help of Claude for anyone else that is thinking about using this box. If you are going to use ethernet, this looks to check most of the boxes for SteamOS 3.8. Probably ordering. Edit: Ordered.
UPDATE: SteamOS installed very easily. It even works with the wifi. It recognized my 8bitdo controller and keyboard without issue. I'm rolling!!
NVME is a Kingston brand. I haven't cracked it open to check RAM.
TL;DR: CPU/iGPU, storage, and Ethernet should be fine on SteamOS 3.8. WiFi works! (Realtek RTL8852BE) is the wildcard — in-kernel support exists, but a known owner of this exact unit had to swap it for an Intel AX210. Worth going in expecting you might need to do the same, or just run it wired.
CPU/iGPU (Ryzen 7 H 255 / Radeon 780M): Should be solid. This chip is a rebadged 8745H — same Zen 4 cores, same RDNA3 780M iGPU. Since SteamOS 3.8 now officially supports AMD GPUs on generic PCs, this is squarely in the supported lane. No concerns here.
WiFi (Realtek RTL8852BE): This is the one to watch. In-kernel rtw89 support has existed since kernel 6.2, so it's not a fundamentally unsupported chip — but Realtek's WiFi 6 parts have a track record of firmware/binding flakiness even when "supported." An owner of this exact mini PC reported the stock WiFi card didn't work for them and ended up swapping it for an Intel AX210. Worth going in expecting you might need to do the same.
Ethernet (dual Realtek RTL8125 2.5G): In-kernel and generally fine, but the generic r8169 driver sometimes grabs the device instead of the dedicated r8125 module, which can cause instability under load. If you see flaky 2.5G throughput, check which driver actually bound to the NIC.
Bluetooth 5.3: Combo'd onto the same Realtek die as the WiFi — so whatever happens with WiFi (works or gets swapped) will carry over to BT too.
NVMe storage: No issues expected — standard PCIe 4.0 NVMe, handled by the in-kernel driver.
USB4 (x2) + OCuLink: Present on this board. Should work given USB4 has matured a lot in recent kernels, but I don't have direct SteamOS confirmation for OCuLink specifically — calling that unverified rather than broken.
Quad 4K display output: Should be fine, all handled by amdgpu via the 780M's display engine.
