Community Reviews
Thermacell E ZoneGuard is a rechargeable mosquito repellent refill that creates a protective outdoor zone and works best when set up 10 to 15 minutes before sitting outside. The pads are heated by a small butane unit, and the effect is described as strong enough to keep mosquitoes at a distance around patios, camping spots, and hot tubs. Wind can reduce performance, and Asian tiger mosquitoes may push through it. The aerosolized insecticide also raises breathing concerns for family use, making it a practical but not perfect outdoor shield.
Common Questions (5)
Set it up about 10-15 minutes before you plan to sit outside so it can build a protection zone. It works best when placed upwind of your seating area, and the effect is reported to improve once the vapor has had a few minutes to spread.
The refill uses pads treated with a chrysanthemum-based extract that are heated by a small butane unit to release repellent into the air. The result is a roughly 15-foot protection zone that can reduce bites, though it is not 100% foolproof.
It can lose effectiveness when it is very windy. The recommended setup is upwind of where you'll sit, and it works best when the wind is light enough for the vapor zone to form.
It works well on many mosquitoes, but Asian tiger mosquitoes may not be affected and can fly through the vapor. The product is a repellent/insecticide zone rather than a guaranteed kill-all solution.
Yes, it is used successfully around outdoor hot tubs and while camping. It is reported to work pretty well in those settings as long as wind is not too strong.

Some mosquitos are hungrier than they are repulsed, so its not 100%, but its like 95% fewer mosquitos. Which means that if you stay outside for 10minutes now before bugs drive you in, you could stay out for an hour or so.
Put them out 10-15m before you plan on staying outside to create a saturation zone (and if there's no humans to eat *and* a horrible smell, I think nearby mosquitos wander away). I tend to put them on the yard-side of chairs/tables to make the bugs fly through as much yuck as possible. IIRC the zone is like 15ft across per thermocell.
Oh and put opened pads in a zip lock bag between uses so they don't go bad. Once the blue color starts noticeably fading, change pads.
