Edit: Went to see if this would make an upcoming weeklong rental cheaper for me. Price I have locked in, 100% refundable (not pay in advance like this promo requires) is $900 for the week for a full-size SUV (Yukon Denali). With this promo, the price jumps to $1120 for the week with ~$80 back in an Amazon gift card. What a joke.
I've been regularly renting cars every 2-3 months for the past decade, to drive on 3000-6000 mile roadtrips across the American West. Anytime they advertise "20-35% off" car rentals, it's never a deal.
So how does one get good car rental deals?
- For the average person, Costco Travel.
- For employees of top-tier consulting companies, your corporate CDPs are often the best negotiated rates I've come across.
- For elite credit card holders (Amex Centurion, etc.) those CDPs often have good discounts as well. But you have to be careful because it can also increase prices (moreso with National/Enterprise/Alamo).
