There's a widespread mistaken belief that Mylar is a metal film, thus making it more environmentally friendly. It is plastic, with a thin layer (a few hundred atoms thick) of metal deposited on it to make it reflective. It's the same plastic used to make disposable water bottles (PET), just much thinner. The crinkling noise is from the plastic, same as when you crush empty water bottles.

Some pets love the crinkly noise. Others hate it. YMMV.
