I feel like the hardware refresh for this and the shield is always around the corner.
The new one will guaranteed not be cheaper - there's a reason why they raised prices now by a significant amount, because they expect it'll be for the longer term and dont want to incrementally increase later. Predictions are to the fall of 2027 so these prices are it, or higher if things get worse, for the next 1.5 years

If you need or want one, probably need to grab one before the costs all go up.
https://www.pocket-lint.com/apple...ple-tv-4k/ "The tech world has been grappling with rising prices all year as an ongoing global memory shortage, caused by AI, continues to drive up the cost of key components like RAM and storage. Apple CEO Tim Cook recently warned that higher prices were "unavoidable" given the worsening situation, and now those increases have officially arrived."
AI and Data Center driven memory shortages, which could get worse given the margins selling into DC are massive VS consumer which is always thin margins. Good thing inflation is down /s.

Why does an Apple TV need 128gb of storage?
it doesnt but that ethernet port is handy which is exclusive to 128gb model on 3rd gen.

That 'hardware refresh' has been 'around the corner' for at least two years. Apple does things when they feel like doing things, not before.

I own five of these from various generations 1-3 and like them. The earlier 'touchpad' remotes were garbage, the newer ones with the round navigation wheel are better. I'll also say that for me, every single update that Apple has done since I bought my first Gen 1 unit has made things just a little bit worse. Every single one.

These are the only Apple devices I own; be aware that unless you also have an iphone or ipad, some settings and features are just not available to you which is exceptionally chickenfeces of Apple.
The only things you can't do (not having an iPhone) that I can think of is screen calibration, which requires Apple's known-quality iPhone cameras in order to set / calibrate the screen colors just a little bit better. iPhone iOS also features remote control of the AppleTV, which is nice. Aside from that, what does lacking an iPhone impact your AppleTV at all?
I like the new features in the new TVOSs - new audio features, new integrations with iPhone (remote...), new HomeKit features (view your cameras and such easily within the interface)... What's not to like?

Prices are not overinflated given Apple officially raised them hours ago. Don't expect these to hang around at the old price for long https://www.macrumors.com/2026/06...ed-prices/
Apple TV 4K price increase details (by far, the highest percentage increases of any of the products on that MacRumors page). If they do wind up doing a hardware refresh, I wouldn't be surprised if they go even higher then.

Memory----Old Price----New Price----% Increase----
64 GB$129.99$199.99~54%
128GB$149.99$249.99~67%

That's "Best Buy refurbished" vs "Apple refurbished". Buying from Apple is almost always a higher price than buying from somewhere else.
This is only inflated becaue they raised the price of the devices, the 128gb now costs $250. Many retailers are still offering at the old prices until inventory runs dry i guess. So if you want an APTV, now is the time

Dead (for shipping anyway). Despite having several stores in the area, both pickup and Same Day delivery are unavailable for me.

I'd rather get it new for this price, $140 at costco: https://www.costco.com/p/-/apple-...4000094111

Reading the comments makes me realize I should get it, been wanting one as a central smart home device for thread/matter support and to avoid janky aging LG OS

The ATV can have the Siri remote say "disconnected" when there's a water bottle in front of it.

Those prices seem inflated. Unless I'm missing something, the 128GB version is listed at $150 ($130 for 64GB) on Best Buy: https://www.bestbuy.com/product/a...JJ8ZH9F3Z4Edit: that's $149.99 for a new unit. Costco has the 128GB model for $139.99: https://www.costco.com/p/-/apple-...4000094111. Deviation4181 and Goonsauce pointed out that Apple is increasing prices across the board, including the Apple TV, so if you wanted one, now might be a good time to buy one (though a hardware refresh is rumored to be around the corner).
That is what I found odd as the prices were different just yesterday (I've been shopping for one!) on Apple's refurbs.

Good point. I just ordered from Costco before they jack the price.

Apple raising prices, buy if you need it now from 3rd party retailers before they jack up the price too.
BestBuy looks sold out of the Wifi+Ethernet version. I bought one this morning, fortunately, before they ran out. I'll keep it as a spare as no way I'll be spending $250 for one these next-gen versions.

This is a very clever way for Apple to clear out inventory before the new one comes out -- raise prices ridiculously high on old inventory in anticipation of a new model and watch people trip over themselves buying of the 3rd party retailers inventory.
