This HP OfficeJet Pro 8138e is a cheap all in one for occasional home printing, scanning, and copying, and Costco's return policy softens the risk. The setup is described as workable, and the low upfront price looks fine if you print regularly or keep HP Instant Ink. The main drawback is the ink model, with locked HP cartridges, starter cartridges that run out fast, and ongoing subscription or replacement costs that can quickly outweigh the deal. Infrequent use also raises clogging and drying concerns, making it a practical fit only if you can live with HP's ink ecosystem.

  • HP's ink and cartridge ecosystem can be locked to HP cartridges, which raises ongoing costs.

  • HP's subscription and Instant Ink approach can charge monthly regardless of usage and can make existing ink unusable after cancellation.

  • Inkjet ink can dry out or clog when printing is infrequent, which can disrupt printing when needed.

  • Low-yield starter cartridges can limit page counts and can force ink purchases soon after setup.

Warning, these are subscription printers. The $50 is the intro price for an expensive ongoing subscription plan. They disable the printing function after a service period until you pay them for more ink. Wouldn't take this for free.
that is crazy

So buy printer and print however much ink is in there then either dump it or use for parts not worth buying ink

This printer is the equivalent of the razor and blade strategy -- give a way the razor and make 'em bend over to pay for the blades. Same thing here. This printer is LOCKED to used ONLY HP brand print cartridges. EXPENSIVE. In my opinion, if you are going to keep a printer for a while, get a tank-style printer where you refill with a bottle of cheap ink (any brand, even compatible ink). The printer costs a bit more upfront, but if you use a printer enough, you will wind up saving money with a tank-style (which typically comes with 1-3 years of ink IN THE BOX).Just checked, and here's the RIP OFF: HP wants $73 for a black cartridge that only prints 1000 pages and color cartridges are only 800 pages (and this is with the EXTENDED cartridges that are double the pages of the regular cartridges). Also, this printer comes with "starter" cartridges that are far less than the regular, so expect to be shelling out $200 for a set of ink VERY SOON.https://www.staples.com/hp-923e-e...t_24599314
I was just thinking about there razor subscription no longer seems to be a thing any more, at least I don't hear about them (I rarely shave, so I am still going through my 2015s 1st pack supplies lol)

The expensive ink cartridges only have 800-1000 pages. HP always ships "starter" cartridges with the printer, typically having one half or less the normal amount of ink. That's not many pages, even for $50.

Great deal, if you print regularly! My problem with inkjet printers is that given how rarely I print these days, the ink tends to clog up and dry out between uses. Wish I could find something in that size and price range for color laser!

My aunt has this printer. It was a beach to set up, and they do have subscription model. I'd never recommend inkjets anyway.
I am dying! I just setup this very printer for the neighbor and it was a bear to do so. I thought it was their computer that was SLOW causing the issues.....disk at 100% and 3.9G of 4G RAM used. Roflmao

If you're looking forward to overpaying for ink... enjoy.
Otherwise... hard pass.
