The Switch 2 Upgrade Pack adds more than a simple frame rate bump to Breath of the Wild, with higher resolution textures, 60 fps, a second save slot, expanded cloud inventory, and Zelda Notes app integration for navigation and audio diaries. It also keeps the game optional, since the base version still runs without it, and active Nintendo Switch Online Expansion Pack members get it included. The main drawback is that the upgrade is paid and tied to an active subscription or the cartridge key, which frustrates players who expected a free optimization. A practical add on if the extra features matter.
Players who want smoother performance on newer hardware, because the upgrade adds higher frame rate and higher-resolution textures.
Families using the navigation app, because it gives objective guidance and helps finish tasks without spending hundreds of hours.
Players who want extra save flexibility, because the upgrade adds a second save file and expanded cloud inventory.
Active Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack subscribers, because the upgrade is included at no additional cost while the membership stays active.
Players who want to avoid paying extra for hardware improvements, because the upgrade charges for performance boosts that feel like a patch.
Players who want the game to stay fully usable after a subscription lapses, because access to the upgrade ends when the membership expires.
Players who rely on item duplication to offset breakable weapons, because the upgrade patches out that glitch and removes that workaround.
Players expecting a major content expansion, because the upgrade mainly improves performance and adds small features rather than a full new game.

- A copy of the base game (digital or physical)
This works on a Switch 1 or a Switch 2To play the Switch 2 version of the game you need:
- A copy of the Switch 2 upgrade (digital or physical)
This only works on the Switch 2. The only physical copies of the upgrade are the physical red "Switch 2 Edition" cartridges, which contain both the base game (playable on the Switch 1 or Switch 2) and the upgrade (which is used only on the Switch 2).Sign up for a Slickdeals account to remove this ad.
And what "entitlement?" That Switch 2 is mighty expensive for what it is is, and people have to pay extra $$$ to have the newer hardware NOT artificially limited? This ain't a remaster, don't pretend it is. You are paying money to NOT have an arbitrary and intentional limit to performance using hardware you paid for. No amount of mental gymnastics can change that reality.
You pay already paid $$$ to upgrade hardware, a basic expectation of that is improved performance, especially with games known to have performance....opportunities. Every generational jump between mainstream consoles and backward compatible titles tends to NOT charge for this basic expectation to use the hardware you paid for. Honestly, that tends to be a major selling point for getting you to jump on the new Xbox, new PS, etc. But not here, you have to pay for the new hardware AND per game.
And the "expanded cloud inventory"...how could we forget that extra few KB's that every other gaming service does NOT restrict or charge for. You think Steam, PS, Microsoft, Epic, etc have ever charged me a PER GAME PAYMENT for cloud saves or "inventory?" Nope.
*LOL...these apologists are wild. I'm surprised they aren't suggesting the upgrade park should cost more....
For some reason I'm torn between selling the opened version of BOTW and having the Switch 2 version of both, or returning that Switch 2 version of BOTW and buying this for $7.
I don't have NSO and it makes sense to just get the upgrade, but I kinda want the newer packaging. Ugh. lol.

Only thing is, is the new version a legit physical copy or one of the new ones that is physical but had a code tied to it which functionally makes it linked to your account? I don't know, if even semi digital, it might have no resell value later so that might be worth it to consider. well taken care of Switch physical games tend to hold their value really well on eBay so I'd always keep that in mind when buying since you can resell later.
I have already swapped the Switch 1 for Switch 2 versions of TOTK, Mario Wonder, Metroid 4 & Kirby Forgotten Land, returning the unopened S1 versions. I do have the S2 version of BOTW but haven't opened it.
If they came out with a S2 version of Mario Odyssey, I would NOT get it because the S2 upgrade is free...unless it had extra content.
Such a stupid point to get stuck on, it's 100% the collectibility aspect for sure.
