The Switch 2 Upgrade Pack adds more than a simple frame rate bump to Breath of the Wild, with higher resolution textures, 60 fps, a second save slot, expanded cloud inventory, and Zelda Notes app integration for navigation and audio diaries. It also keeps the game optional, since the base version still runs without it, and active Nintendo Switch Online Expansion Pack members get it included. The main drawback is that the upgrade is paid and tied to an active subscription or the cartridge key, which frustrates players who expected a free optimization. A practical add on if the extra features matter.
Common Questions (6)
Yes. The upgrade is included at no additional cost for active Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack subscribers, and access is lost if the membership expires. Without an active subscription, you need to buy the upgrade pack separately.
It adds Switch 2-specific enhancements like higher-resolution textures, higher frame rate, a second save file, and Zelda Notes app integration. Zelda Notes includes navigation guidance and audio diary-style content, and may also support item sharing/cloud inventory features.
No, the Switch 2 edition is installed but the cartridge acts as the key that lets it be played. The base game can run on Switch 1 or Switch 2, but the Switch 2 upgrade only works on Switch 2, and the physical red Switch 2 Edition cartridge contains both the base game and the upgrade.
Yes, it is more than a simple frame-rate unlock. The upgrade also adds Zelda Notes integration, a second save file, higher-resolution textures, and expanded cloud inventory, though it is not a major overhaul.
Yes. The Switch 2 edition patches out item duplication glitches, so that old workaround is no longer available. The unpatched Switch 1 version can still be used that way.
It is optional. The game remains playable without it, but you do not get the Switch 2 improvements such as 1440p/4K output at 60 fps and Zelda Notes features.

I am also in the camp that wishes that these types of upgrades would have been free/included as part of the upgrade cycle. To me this should be a given to try and drum up new console sales while the initial library is weak (think about what Microsoft did with the Xbox Series One X). But ultimately we're owed nothing so pay the man.
I do wish that we could have used our No Rush Shipping Credits on these types of purchases. I feel like you used to be able to do so back in the day with Digital Games/DLC but admittedly I've never tried a Nintendo DLC.
