I grew up in South Lake... This is not true at all. It's 30 to Sand Harbor which is the best beach and another 5 to Incline. Also walking distance to the best mountain, Heavenly, for winter skiing or summer activities. Yes it's not right next to the best beaches, but it's a fine spot. Edgewood golf is walking distance. All the casinos and shows right there. South Lake has multiple great beaches (Baldwin prob the best, but is 20+ minutes away, though close by Camp Rich, Emerald Bay, and Fallen Leaf.
South Lake also has way better food than you'll find anywhere else. Aleworks, South Lake Tahoe Brewery, Verde, Burger Me, Burger Lounge, Yellow Sub, Sno-Flake, etc.

It's a huge lake and people need to be aware and plan for that. You can easily spend a week on the south, north or west shore and have a blast. Prob not super worth trying to do the whole lake in a week unless you know exactly what you want to do

If you stay here, you're just looking to be in the general vicinity of Tahoe, and by that I don't mean that it's not remotely lake front as much as South Lake is not great and you're going to use this as a jump off point to drive to the rest of the lake. It'd be an ok hotel and price if you're planning to do a lot of driving to the more favorable areas of the lake - over an hour to Tahoe City, 2 hours to Incline Village, 30 minutes to Emerald Bay (but nowhere to park), plus the need to walk a ways to the mediocre beaches in South Lake. South Lake is a cross between the gambling across the state line, and all of the worst parts of any seasonal beach town you've seen - lots of kitschy mini golf if that's your thing. And the traffic is terrible.

2 hrs?! More like 40 min from south lake to incline village. It's a 27mi drive.😂

I stayed here 3 weeks ago. It was definitely not luxury by any means. I would give it 2 out of 5 stars. The manager was very sweet and addressed our concerns. but I would not stay here again. Also, note there is no elevator so if you're on the third floor, you'll have to lug your bags up.
