I purchased this a little over a year ago. It came with a faulty power supply that sent low voltage AC to the device. I found out after noticing the small electrical "prick" while working on the PC the D6-320 was connected to. It was a weird scenario that resulted in the low voltage AC traveling down the USB-C connector and electrifying my desktop's chassis.

I used a multimeter to verify my theory, sent video to Terramaster, and they sent me a replacement power supply. The DAS worked fine both before and after swapping the power supply.

I doubt that Terramaster manufactures their own power supplies. And the rest of the hardware seems really well built. The situation hasn't deterred me from buying their products again. But I thought experience would be worth sharing.

Great, now you gave me something to worry about. Kidding. Thanks for sharing. Love my D4 and would upgrade to this, but hard drive prices are so crazy right now!

Fascinating & absolutely worth documenting it here imo; this kind of problem can sink an otherwise perfectly good product so hopefully they remediate.

Not many people would put in the work, much less share it so thanks for that. 🫡

I purchased this in 2023 at the same price and I'm not having any issues with it. I have attached it to my server via a USB C (not recommended though). I have 4x20tb in it and there are LEDs on each enclosure which indicates whether there's a functioning drive. It retains ON/Off state after power cycle which is great. Also, it's smaller in size than looks in the image. Metal body helps to keep it cool. I hope it keep running for years.

I had hard computer restart after HD in D4 forced to unmount on its own and I tried to get it back on by mounting it. Happened couple of times and also had 1 or 2 drives that I unmount and it will not mount again without restarting the whole unit. Maybe I have faulty power supply as well. I don't know how it can force my laptop to restart like that.

You gotta do what you gotta do. I'll always encourage others to avoid USB storage for servers. But there shouldn't be any gatekeeping on something like this. Based on someone's situation, there may not be any other elegant* options. Or, using something like this could enable an extra layer of redundancy.

I used to be working with a pair of 14 TB external USB drives shared from a vanilla Ubuntu Server system. And I've had lots of other configurations over the years. Yes, I have run into storage issues related to USB. But as long as I've made sure to keep backups, I've been able to recover.

Now I have my primary TrueNAS system configured with direct SATA connections. And I pass-thru the D6-320 in this deal to a VM that is my Secondary TrueNAS system. It acts as just a location to backup my primary TrueNAS instance. But it is still very valuable. It enables me to easily migrate to another physcial host. I just need to forklift the VM, switch the USB-C cable, and pass-thru the hard drives. It's not "High Availability", but it is simple enough to provide"High Confidence."

* "Elegant", as in technical elegance. This typically means a strong mixture of simplicity, reliability, and performance. Being able to solve a large, complicated problem is great. But it's even better to be able to simplify a problem so that it's easily solved.
