MERV 5, you can probably see visible holes in the filter having that low of filtration rating.

That's not the bad thing you may imagine it to be. Having a higher MERV rating could easily overwork your AC unit. Like sucking a golf ball with a straw

Yes, I've heard anything merv13 or higher is not recommended for residential units. We typically use merv11 for our home.
