A bazillion families would love to have this, from remote places in North Carolina and Kentucky after the floods to everyone near a hurricane zone. When power goes out for days, not just hours, this is the capacity to keep some sense of normalcy.

Who buys these things? The $10,000 version. Are people able to avoid paying utility companies crazy high prices for power?

A whole home generator in Florida (common) costs $30,000. This is a steal compared to that and gives you room for a solar system in that price range.

What are you smoking? A basic 24KW Generac (which is a BIG generator) is 7K at home depot, which is like the worst place to buy a generator. Add another 5K for install and install materials and you are only at 12K
Now if you are smart and lucky you can get Onan diesel generators on military surplus with very little hours for penny's on the dollar.

Bruh, a generac standby generator with install costs a fraction of that, a 10-12kw gen and an interlock could be under 2k...
18kwh of battery backup with no generation capacity would run your fridges and lights maybe... it is maybe a half a day's average usage in the air-conditioning running part of the US.

Show me a quote for an installed in-line whole home generator and you will understand. The generator is less than half the total cost.

I'm not talking about Home Depot generator with a transfer switch.

Yeah, that's why I specified a Generac, unless similar units that are good enough for practically everyone are now no longer good enough. That's probably the most common standby generator in the country in its various flavors, and is not exactly a home depot special. And if you are paying 23k for a generator install, then I don't know what to tell you other than your electrician and whoever ran your gas lines saw a sucker coming.
Even thinking an 18kwh battery even begins to satisfy the needs of a house to the extent a generator would suggests you are likely unsure of much regarding the subject... but a home depot generator and a transfer switch would be much more useful than this at a fraction of the cost.

Living in NorCal, electric price is creazy here, and selling to grid is like nothing after NEM3.0. Use these to power the entire home (multiple units connected to a smart panel) and store solar to charge EV after work. I have a system generate electricity worth 4000-5000 annually, of course you will have a very high upfront cost.
