I am not an expert, but 8x is generally considered to be the best general purpose strength.
If you are searching for binoculars, I noticed that Scheels has the Leupold BX-1 10x42 McKenzie HD Binoculars for $100 (normal price is around $200).

Leupold is also a great brand, but I can't comment on the quality difference between Nikon and Leupold. The non-sale price of the Leupold is higher.
