If you have a Ryzen 5900x 12 core. This probably isn't worth the upgrade. The pass mark score is only 5000 points more. The single core performance is the same. True it's an extra 4 cores. But base clock is much lower. But also it's about 2000 points passmark behind the 5950x. So it makes sense if you have applications that could use those extra cores.

AM4? Wow. Guess AMD is really cutting deals to get rid of old stock or something? My AM4 platform computer was built in 2018...... 8 years ago.

I did exactly this. despite this not being the "premium silicon" of the 5950x, the production technology seems to have really come a long way in the last couple years, and it feels like a golden chip.

I had a 5900x 12 core that worked well enough at stock speeds or PBO, but I couldnt tweak curve optimizer very far, and not at all on some cores. I bit on the 5900XT a few months ago, and am EXTREMELY happy with the decision. My cinebench r23 went from 21,000 to 27,000 instantly, temps arent spiking as high, and overall the system just feels more stable with a heavy CO curve. I was able to sell my 5900x, so my out of pocket was under 100 bucks for the upgrade. Some of the best money I've spent in years.

Yes, there's been a recent push to extend the life of the decade old AM4 platform over the last few years. With ram prices being as high as they are, many people are opting to extend their existing AM4 systems and DDR4 ram. The real world performance bump to AM5 simply isnt worth the cost of a full system upgrade, at least in many cases. Its incredible that this platform has held its own as long as it has.

these went down to 220 not long ago, but now that things got crazy, even outdated AM4 still has silly prices.

Search news for AM4. Due to RAMpacolypse, prices are jumping and inventories are running thin. AM4 is still a very viable platform. Especially the Ryzen 5000 CPUs. I'm not going to try to convince anyone that Ryzen 5000 CPUs are better than newer generations. But, if you've got an AM4 motherboard or access to DDR4, then CPUs like this are cost-effective upgrades.

I jumped from a 2700x to a 5900xt undr AM4.

Finished my upgrade to AM5 and the 9950x is insane. My 9950x + 9070xt renders 10x faster than my 5900xt + 6800.

I know it's viable for "many" but the 5900x was never really meant for gaming, mostly productivity.

Absolutely.

I was rendering 1080p video at around 30fps and I'm pushing 300fps rendering in Vegas Pro.

Was genuinely shocked.

10x sounds "wrong". I'm not saying that you are wrong. But as far as I'm aware, neither the CPU or GPU upgrade should provide anywhere near that kind of speed-up. If I had to guess (as some who is decently smart but frequently wrong), it could be related to something specific being added. Like a new instruction set for the CPU, better hardware encoding on the GPU, etc.

It's like if you have 2 employees, and one completes tasks twice as fast as the other on average. One day you needed something translated from English into Spanish. Without knowing anything else, the faster employee would be expected to be about twice as fast at this. But if you found out that only one of the 2 was a fluent Spanish speaker, that person could be expected to the task 10 times faster or more.

Sorry for that rambling. What I'm trying to say is I suspect your upgrade isn't 10x faster in general. However, you may have been lucky in that one of your common, time consuming tasks got a massive 10x speed boost. That's a massive win!
