Being able to control the fan and light independently using the remote when there's only a single switched hot at the overhead box makes remotes invaluable, not to mention being able to adjust the fan speed and/or turn on/off the overhead light from a bedside remote in the middle of the night.

I would agree but why can we have both? Physical switches and remote control. Each over riding the other if used.

I actually have that setup - hardwired Lutron fan controller and hardwired Lutron Diva dimmer at bedroom entry doorways, with Pico remotes on the bedside tables in 4 bedrooms. (BTW the Lutron fan controller won't work with this fan though, as it has a DC motor). That requires separate switched hots to each overhead fixture though, which I made sure to run when I added ceiling fans to all of our bedrooms. Fans and lights can also be phone app or voice controlled.
