The Yakima SkyBox 16 Carbonite is a roomy rooftop cargo box that shines for camping, ski trips, family travel, and hauling gear without stuffing the car. Long-term use sounds solid, with boxes holding up for years and retaining value well. It also helps keep cargo protected from sun damage and can free up space for dogs or bulky luggage. The main caveats are that crossbars are sold separately, roof height clearance matters, and loading is easier with two people.

  • The roof box can make road trips easier by adding cargo capacity for families and pets.

  • The SkyBox 16 can hold up well over 15+ years with occasional use.

  • The Carbonite shell can help protect stored items from sun damage when kept in a garage.

  • The deal price can compare favorably versus newer Yakima or Thule boxes of the same size.

  • The roof box requires careful setup because the lid must close properly for key release.

  • The crossbars are a separate purchase, so additional mounting costs may apply.

  • The box can be a hassle to manage because roof height and clearance need consideration when installed.

  • REI promo timing can create ordering problems, including cancellations after a deal ends due to inventory issues.

can 2 people fit or is this more of a single person. looking to bring 7 people in my hatchback
Well... my mother-in-law can fit one of her double stacked sub sandwiches in it..... so the answer is yes, you can definitely fit two people.

What do people put in these ? Are they running out of room in the back of their vehicle?
Things they want to keep warm in the summer and cold in the winter. It's certainly cheaper than buying a larger vehicle.

How is $500 for a box a good deal?
This is an outgoing model but newer models of the same size from Yakima or Thule are over $200 more and this is the same as smaller knock off boxes often go for. If you're a camper or have an outdoor hobby this is a lot nicer than stuffing your car to bursting.

Two adults and two dogs and my Outback, which isn't a small vehicle, is barely able to fit a weekend's worth of camping gear.

I have one of these that must be over 15 years old and gets used once or twice a year. It holds up well.
bought one from the REI used sale and it sits in the garage to reduce the sun damage. It's great for use case. But a hassle to think about height clearance issues with it up there.

Paid $440 before tax on basically this exact box almost a decade ago. Use it 5-8 weekends a year. Very useful. Once you have kids and a few dogs, logistics of vehicle space and luggage needs become tricky.

Any overflow that does not fit in the vehicle, especially the longer items that would normally force you to fold down the second row.

It's obvious you're either single or just you and your significant other. Let's see how much you can stuff in your vehicle with a family of 5 going on a long trip or camping or something like that. The added cargo space is a godsend.

I have a 20 yr old Thule that's I believe is 7 1/2 ft long. Use to use it on long trips back to Canada from California. Worked awesome. My ex's dad scraped the top of it driving with it in a parking garage… it survived that, just needs a new paint job.

Skis and extra baggage for ski trips. Last weekend we did a beach birthday party for my kid and we needed it to bring all the supplies in one run, even though I have pretty good storage in my vehicle already.

Just a heads up for anyone that missed this, and it's a big YMMV, but check Sierra if you have one nearby. Saw two in my local store when I stopped in the other day for $440ish, no box or anything and just sitting on the floor so didn't want to mess with my REI order for relatively little savings. But might be worth checking for anyone that missed this and is ok with whatever reason it ended up at that type of store.

I was doing some last minute browsing if July 4th weekend deals and noticed that REI restocked last minute. I was able to snag an order before the sale officially ended at midnight.
