The Monolith 7 channel amp is mainly a headroom and expansion piece for home theater setups, especially when an AVR is hitting low power limits or needs extra channels. It can run cool, add dynamics, and help with future Atmos or 7.2.4 upgrades, while some setups barely change because the receiver already has enough power. The main cautions are reported hum on some units, a two prong power cord, and occasional compatibility quirks. It fits best when the system truly needs external amplification.

Common Questions (5)

  • Some units reportedly have a faint hum that can persist even after replacement, while others are silent from normal listening distance. Standby behavior also varies in reports: one measurement showed about 38W when turned off, while another setup showed 0W on standby and about 100W in operation.

  • It can help when the AVR is current-limited into low-impedance loads, because the external amp can supply more headroom and preserve dynamic peaks. For typical listening levels, though, several comments say the difference may be small unless your speakers are hard to drive or you listen very loudly.

  • Yes. The Denon 4300 can use amp assign or pre-outs to feed an external amp, but it does not have dedicated independent preamp mode; the 3800 does, which makes it more useful if you want to offload selected channels and reduce heat or power draw.

  • For normal movie listening at comfortable levels, 90WPC is usually enough, especially with moderately sensitive speakers and a subwoofer. Several comments note that many setups never approach the power where this amp matters, and that the bigger gains often come from room correction, speaker choice, or adding subs.

  • Yes. It is only a power amplifier, so it needs a preamp or AVR with pre-outs for volume control, input switching, and source management; it does not provide turntable or CD inputs on its own.

Wait, you don't turn it up but you need 4kw of power? Why????

The speaker doesn't give a crap about how much power is in reserve, it never sees it. It cares about how much power it gets. It sounds like you are never using more than like 10w.
Again, it does not seem like you have any experience putting together a system for a mid sized room.

Although dialog may coast along at 85 decibels, peaks can easily hit 120+ decibels in a movie theater. If you want those peaks to be undistorted at home, you need clean power reserves.

7kw of power total???? How many breakers do you have feeding the system? To properly feed a system that pulls that much you'd need four 20 amp breakers.
You would hate my TIG welder, it has a 100 amp breaker all to itself.

My guess is over the years you've bought more expensive and powerful amps and you confirmation biased your way into thinking they sounded better. Classic audiophile.
Audiophiles pass away, and their wives and kids don't want any of that stuff. Martin Logan Prodigy, Revel Salons, Aragon amps.... all stuff that once was worth $$$$ is now just passed on 'to someone who would appreciate it'. Sometimes the kids will poke through the vinyl and take a few souvenirs, but they sure are not interested in hundreds of heavy records.

Wow, great deal on the 2 channel amplifier. Be aware that the Monolith M7100X performs worse than the Monolith M2100X. Audioholics Home Theater forums state the M7100X has excessive built-in noise and poor signal to noise (SNR) specs. Here's the Audioholics review [youtu.be].

As much as Im a fan of external amps, not everyone actually needs them.Imo if you go external go big, just for the speakers that need them.If/when you upgrade loudspeakers, efficiency becomes pretty irrelevant for the most part.So does any benchmark specs to internal power supply. I do love that my 3800 as a pre pro, with D-ART is sonically better than all these flagship AVRs Smilie! Good luck and enjoy!
How much more than 90 W per channel would I need at the volume i play - comfortably loud? And also, what is it gonna cost me? A heck of a lot more than $325 I assume.

This seems like a great deal for 7 channels. If you really want to go wild, you can use this to power a set of speakers, then use your AVR to power another set. The only thing I wish this had was a gain/volume knob.In my theater, I have 7 floor speakers and 7 ceiling speakers. It really works well. The Marantz 7013 controls 7 floor, and the rear back atmos ceiling speakers. My Harman Kardon AVR635 controls 2 front atmos ceiling speakers and 3 front ceiling speakers as mains.
Wait, you can have three mains at ear level and three above you as well? What sorcery is this? How does it sound?

Thanks for sharing your experience!

I'm wondering if this issue is present on every unit or if it's a QC issue. Two units back to back, plus the Audioholics assessment definitely lends to defective design being the culprit.

How severe is the hum and were you able to reduce it? Do you consider the amp to be enjoyable even with the hum?
It's not too loud hum to hear from a reasonable distance (1.5+ meter) even with Klipsch (high sensitivity speakers).

So I upgraded from a 4400 which would not be much different than the 4300 power wise.

It drove my 7.1 Monitor Audio Gold Series setup at average levels with no problems.

My educated guess, this amp is not going to provide much(if at all) sonic benefit over those internal amps with your setup.

My point was if you go externals.
Get one that makes speaker choice pretty irrelevant(go big)!
You only need one for the speakers that will benefit from it.
Power supplies on AVRs will be pretty much irrelevant going forward also.

Yeah, but how much more than 90 WPC do you need?

If you mean "you" as a general you, it depends on many factors.

If you mean me personally.
I actually didn't really need them.
But my plan was to eventually go to separates, main reason was for better room correction(ie DLBC).
Ran into a great deal on amps, went big.

Denon/Audyssey just kept improving, switching made no sense, not worth the very high cost.

2021 came around, with it, Dirac!
Denon got into the mix.
3800 + full suite Dirac cost me just under $1600!
There is nothing that touches that performance close to that cost!
Definitely zero reason for separates now!

IMO it sounds amazing. Basically I wired my theater with 7 overhead speakers(Snell 8") and 7 floor/wall speakers(Athena's), so i could pick between both. Then one day I thought... why not both? I had my old AVR (Harman Kardon AVR635)

If the amp puts out more than 30wpc into 4Ω, it locks into limp mode (unless unplugged for more than 10mins).

If you have old 8Ω speakers, they might never go into limp....but 8Ω speakers are pretty rare nowadays.

The odd part is that there is no indication on the unit that you are in limp mode. The receiver just keeps working at the greatly reduced wattage.
Where did you get the information that 8 ohm speakers are rare? Klipsch, Emotiv, SVS, and many others produce 8 ohm speakes.

I find it interesting when people are looking for deals but don't do the research. If you have a decent receiver that provides decent power to all your used channels, then you most likely don't need a 90-watt external amp for "normal" use. I did use a Monoprice 2-channel amp when I had my RZ50, but only because I needed it to power 2 extra Atmos channels. Now that I have the RZ70, it is not being used at all.

Probably because there are so many different opinions, so much "it depends," and information that's scattered over so many different sources. It's not an easy subject to "research." I've spoken to speaker manufacturers whose opinions differ from some of those in this thread.

It's actually fairly easy to research:

1) Get opinions and benchmarks from sites like ASR or AVS. I would have included Audioholics but they have paid advertising on their site (unlike ASR, which is entirely consumer driven).

2) You won't find much audio truth in SD and similar sites. It's full of vendors who want to steer you one way or the other. Just look at all the "fights" b/w supermanrob and turnne. They always feel like their commission's at stake when you bad mouth their products. LOL!
