The Monolith 7 channel amp is mainly a headroom and expansion piece for home theater setups, especially when an AVR is hitting low power limits or needs extra channels. It can run cool, add dynamics, and help with future Atmos or 7.2.4 upgrades, while some setups barely change because the receiver already has enough power. The main cautions are reported hum on some units, a two prong power cord, and occasional compatibility quirks. It fits best when the system truly needs external amplification.

 • The amp can reduce AVR heat when the receiver is not powering the speaker channels.

 • The amp can work well for multi-speaker setups where external amplification helps manage channel loading.

 • Some setups report clean sound with no noticeable hum after installation and calibration.

 • The amp can provide headroom for dynamic peaks that receivers may limit during movie listening.

 • The amp can produce a faint hum that may persist even after warranty replacement.

 • The unit lacks turntable and CD player hookups, so additional components are required for those sources.

 • The amp may not provide an obvious limp-mode indicator, which can complicate troubleshooting with certain receivers.

 • The amp can require careful integration because some receivers and setups may still leave internal amps drawing power depending on preamp mode behavior.

The truth of the matter is that 95-99% of folks on SD are not going to be able to tell the difference if THD has set in or if their speakers are clipping (they'll probably just lower the volume until it's acceptable). The ASR reviews are only going to have meaning for folks who want their money to go a little further and not have to worry about their AVR/amp if they upgrade their speakers down the road. If pricing was much more similar, then it may be a no-brainer for most folks to choose D&M over the likes of Onkyo, Integra, or Pioneer just based on the tests alone. However, D&M pricing has put quite a bit of the enthusiast darlings out of reach for most people (i.e. Denon 3800) and that's why these PAC AVRs continue to be a hot ticket on SD. It's always been "pay to play" so if you want peace of mind, you'll have to spend more!

Oh geez says the guy that constantly uses these talking points as "influence" to "great" or "detrimental" sounding!

D&M cost more because they offer more and believed to be higher/better quality.

People like to pay extra for "peace of mind" but it's not a benefit if you don't use it.
Especially when it comes to Dirac, you "pay to play" even to have access to play.

I got this deal and I barely notice any difference over connecting the 20 yr old Def tech flagship speakers directly to the Onkyo TX-NR1007 - the beefy 50 lb receiver which is also almost 20 years old. I have just a plain old 7.2 setup. No atmos yet. Debating whether to keep it or return it. Maybe I'll try it for a few more days, but then the price is too good. ๐Ÿค”

Any strange humming from the amp, like some of the pre-release models had?

Did it come with the 12v turn on wires, or did you have to supply your own?

That's no surprise.
I would suggest returning it especially if you're considering moving up to Atmos.
It is costly to do properly.

Superman says "return it", especially if I am considering moving up to Atmos, which is when I am most likely to need an amp for the extra channels. He also says it is costly, but it might end up costing me more buying a 2 channel amp when I really need one.

Bad advise rob, and you are no superman. ๐Ÿ˜‚

No humming. Very clean sound just like the original.
I do notice increased volume from the rear facing drivers, which is nice.

Waiting on everyone to leave the house to re-do the Audyssey setup.

Only power cables are provided. I also noticed that there is no 12V trigger for the main zone on my receiver. Only for zones 2 and 3.

The amp was warm to touch in the morning after being on standby overnight, but kill-a-watt shows no power draw.

Good high current amps should "sound" neutral to those who are not blessed with "golden ears". You'll easily notice the difference vs inferior amps if you have low impedance complex phase angle speakers (less than 3.5 ohm below 150 Hz). I would definitely keep the amp if it comes with +900VA transformer and +60000 microfarad main filter capacitors. Suspect no Japanese capacitors (Panasonic, United Chemicon, Rubycon, Nichicon, etc) inside at this price.

There is some current going into the amp if it is still warm overnight. Suspect your meter is bad, or something else is keeping the amp from going into sleep mode. Modern amps don't need more than 0.5 W in standby mode. You can check the power draw by connecting an ammeter in series to the AC line and measure the current. Multiply the current (A) by 120 (V) to obtain incoming power in WATT. The amp is rated at 1200 W per the posted picture.

I am leaning on keeping it as well. The huge toroid and big caps inside looks cool. If nothing, just for bragging rights. ๐Ÿ˜‰

Too much work TBH
. The meter is quite sensitive to very small loads. So I think it is accurate enough.
I'll contact Monoprice to see if they'll swap it. Anyone else having the same issue, please post.

I wonder why the 1200W rating. 90*7 = 630 W. Rated at nearly double. ๐Ÿค”

lol well if you do, I know you we NEED a new AVR.

So if you "really need one", this "barely" made a difference.
Imo you're still going to need another amp to make more of a difference(over 135wpc).
Yes that will be costly.

Hey, but what do I know with my common sense logic!
Apparently I'm clueless, vendor, salesman, lousy, idiot, pretty sure I missed a few.

May I make a final good "advise".
Put me on ignore & if I respond to another one of your comments just ignore it.
It will help with all these pointless post. Wink
Good luck!

I definitely need a new AVR for atmos. But I am very happy with the Onkyo 7.2. (actually 9.2 since it supports wide / height channels).
The reason I will really need an amp is not necessarily for more power, but when the receiver has only 7 or 9 channels of amplification but processes and has pre outs for more channels. It does not have to be costly.

Nothing personal here. Just discussing AVRs and amps.

1200W is input power from the wall. AB amp is 50-70% efficient. Most class AB receivers are rated around 600-700 W (VA) input, yielding a true continuous total speaker output between 300 and 450 W. A good amp with huge storage primary capacitors and robust output devices can put out short burst of power (dynamic headroom) that's 1.5 to 2x the continuous power.

Long term listening at sound pressure level (SPL) greater than 80 dB will result in permanent hearing damage. The SPL at 3m (10ft) with a pair of moderately sensitive 87 dB speakers and 90W speaker input is 100 dB, This 20 dB headroom (100 minus 80) is ideal for uncompressed recording/soundtrack. The SPL drops to 95 dB with 30W speaker input. You'll definitely hear the difference between 30W and 90W input if the nominal listening level is 80 dB and the recording material contains wide dynamic range soundtrack.

A listening position that's 15 ft away will require 200W speaker input to reach the same sound pressure level attained at 10 ft. Use the links below to calculate the theoretical and nominal SPL level at your listening position.

That's weird to not just give a 'zone one' 12v trigger.

If you are not using zone 2 or 3, then I guess turn one of them on just for the 12v trigger to your new amp.
