4300 has "amp assign" so you can use whatever channels you want with an external or the internal amps.

Even if it didn't, you would connect an external amp to the "pre-outs" and just not plug anything into the receiver's speaker terminals. The receiver runs cooler when it does not have to deliver power to the speakers.

Thanks! Just pulled the trigger. Hopefully it gives the speakers a little more headroom on the 4300, and will help prevent the 30 wpc crippling when I get the 3800.

I don't think either Denon has XLR outputs, so I'll have to buy RCA cables. Any recommendations on retailers/specifications for the RCA cables? These would be a very short run cables. I'm thinking Monoprice must sell something that's decent.

Anyway, thanks OP! I missed prior sales on the M7100X for $299 (briefly available) and then $325 and $371 several years ago and did not see them on sale again till now.

Background
I have a Marantz SR7013 9.2 channel Atmos /dtsx receiver (got a nice deal in 2020) driving a surround setup.
It powers 9 channels (of course as it is a 9.2 channel receiver); however it is capable of processing 11 channels with external amplification -
So I hope this M7100X will be a good choice to expand my current 5.2.4 setup to a 7.2.4 setup...

1) Which amp to use for each set of speaker channels?
Now just wondering which of the two (SR7013 receiver and M7100X amplifier) to drive the various speakers in my setup.

2) 'Rear surround' speaker options / recommendations?
I do have some old (no longer used for many years) Advent Legacy speakers lying around.
However, they are a bit large (wide) and the way the back 'wall' of my home theater room is laid out, and what I already have against the back wall (media cabinet furniture), the Legacy speaker's width is not ideal (for one side of the room at least).

I am wondering if anyone has anyone good rear surround speaker recommendations?

(I bought the Advent Legacy new in 1988 / 1989 or so and they still look completely new, even the foam surrounds are still in flawless condition. However, I stopped using them when I bought some powered Infinity Overture 2 speakers (in use now) - still work great (even the built-in powered portion). They also look great still).

Thanks in advance for any recommendations for rear surround speakers, as well as any suggestions in terms of whether to use the Marantz SR7013 receiver vs. M7100X amplifier to power each of the various channels in a 7.2.4 setup.

You can get a "snake" which is a grouping of all the cables together. Makes for a very clean installation with good airflow.

Here is a 6 channel example:

I'm driving so I can't search you exactly what you need, but a 7 or 8 channel snake, with whatever length you want (leave some slack so you can work on it over the years).

Overkill for 2 channel stereo.

If you only need 2 channels, this is the unit you need and is $199 after the SHOP50 code:

I'm surprised at the comments that modern speakers are more likely to stress amps with variably low impedance. The only speakers I've had with that issue were 30 or more years old (and were very high end at the time). They sounded great with heavy duty class AB amps but fully killed more than one receiver.

I tried to pair them with a of the top-of-the-line (well, maybe a step or two down, but still very expensive) Yamaha Aventage amp, and they sounded OK in stereo mode, but trying to run full surround sound with make the amp involuntarily cut output or even shut off entirely. For context, I don't listen to music at very high volumes—even reference volume (85db) feels very loud to me. So it truly is a quirk of speaker design that made these old speakers kill amps. As I understand it, it's principally a result of crossover architecture.

Anyway, if in the exceedingly unlikely event you happen to have speakers like that and are tired of killing amps and receivers, this Monolith should solve your problem (assuming it has an adequate power supply).

(FWIW, I completely got out of passive speakers when I learned how good active designs have gotten. My main setup now is Kali studio monitors with room correction. They're way smaller, not power hogs, and sound better than anything I've tried before. And they're pretty cheap.)

Oh, that's cool. So no issue with the wires being so close causing hum? Guess they have enough shielding. Are these manufacturers selling on Amazon pretty decent?

Yeah, Onkyo, Pioneer, Denon and Integra are just like KIA Motors....not exactly bragging about their limp modes.

The Klipsch are listed as 8 ohm speakers, but they actually dip down to 5.6 ohms. I'm not sure if that's low enough to trigger the limp mode; they are pretty easy speakers to drive.

If you have car audiophile friends, see if one of them will lend you their watt meter and measure if you are stuck in limp mode or not.
Newbee here. How to measure or test if you are stuck in limp mode or not with a watt meter? SPL meter? and some folks here know which receivers likely to go into limp mode.? TIA

They are 99% shielded, so no crosstalk to worry about.

I like to buy cables where I can unscrew the barrel and re-solder the terminals if they should break. So that is what I look for in a cable.

Expensive cables don't do anything at all:

Which Denon has a limp mode? As far as I know, only the 2021 PAC AVRs and the RZ30 has the limp mode. The Denon 3800 passed with flying colors at 4 ohms. Have you actually read any of Amir's reviews or just regurgitating AI?

The 3800 doesn't have a limp mode. It outputs 168W into 2CH at 4 ohms (same test that the RZ30 and its brethren failed).

Limp mode AVRs (as discovered by ASR):
Onkyo RZ50 (and clones Pioneer 505 and Integra DRX 5.4)
Onkyo 7100 (and clones Pioneer 305 and Integra DRX 3.4)
RZ30

The easiest way to tell is once the AVR is in your house, listen as you normally would at a decently high volume. Switch the AVR to 4 ohm impedance mode and see if you can tell a difference. If you don't, then the AVR and your speaker setup is susceptible to this. The idea is that switching to the 4 ohm mode should automatically sap power. If there's no difference in dB or quality of the sound in the lower impedance mode, you are "limping" with no indication!

The bigger brothers Onkyo RZ70, Pioneer 805, and Integra DRX 8.4 doesn't suffer from this. Then again, neither do the Denon 3800, 4800, etc. that the limp mode AVRs are commonly compared against.

If I could afford an extra $130, I would get the 7 channel for room to grow.

I have a Denon 4300h and elac unifi speakers (1st gen), which are rated at just about 4 ohms. I use the speakers in a home theater setup and sit about 7 to 8 feet from the fronts. I don't generally blast audio, but for movies, I'll listen at a comfortably loud level. Would this amplifier improve sound quality for me? Is 90 wpc enough for those speakers at that distance? I believe the 4300 does not have dedicated preamp mode, but is also less likely to go into limp mode.I plan to buy the Denon 3800h at some point, which has dedicated preamp mode and which I understand is more likely to go into limp mode.So maybe it wouldn't really help much with the 4300 but be beneficial for the 3800?
This always gets blown out of proportion.
There are WAY too many IFs for some universal correct answer.

Limp mode is more a paper issue/flaw than a real world one.
"Comfortably loud levels" doesn't come close to this limp mode issue.
Now if you had a very large environment, 9+ power demanding speakers and listen at ear bleeding levels, yes probably gonna be an issue to consider in that scenario.

TBH if you're not satisfied with sound quality & trying to improve it.
There are quite a few others things that would improve sound better than power will.
Especially when you are using a good sub(s).

Correct, the 4300 does not have a dedicated preamp mode.
FYI "amp assigned" is just that, you can assign the amp/channel, nothing to do with preamp mode.

The 3800 does offer dedicated(independent) preamp mode.
Nice benefit that was only offered in their prior flagship model.
Especially if only some of your speakers need/benefit from the extra power.

My suggestion, if you want to improve your sound, look into A1Evo express.
It's a game changer for Audyssey, basically gives you comparable Dirac Room Correction performance for free!
It might not be as good as Dirac ART but that's a whole other rabbit hole especially since it's another $600 cost(if using a sub).

I stop into ASR weekly for my dose of hard audio reality.

I have not read all of Amir's reviews, but I got a used Pioneer 505 cheap when my favorite local audio store got it in trade because of the Limp Mode.

Since I have a rack of quarter century old Parasound 3500 amps (500wpc into 4 ohms), the Pioneer was perfect for me, since I don't need to use the internal amps.

Receivers are junk tech that quickly becomes outdated and replaced constantly. Quality amps are good for decades (well, at least until I have to re-cap them, lol)
