Apple Magic Keyboard with Touch ID and Numeric Keypad is valued most for its Touch ID convenience, especially for waking and unlocking a closed lid Mac setup and for frequent daily sign ins. The extended layout, full size arrow keys, and document navigation controls add practical use, and the keyboard is described as superior to many alternatives for Apple ecosystem workflows. The main drawbacks are the high price, the lack of backlighting, and the absence of mechanical switches. Touch ID reliability has also been reported as broken for long stretches on some setups, making it a premium accessory with a few notable tradeoffs.

Common Questions (6)

  • For frequent Mac login and authentication, Touch ID is treated as the main reason to buy it, with one comment valuing it at about $100 and using it around 10 times per workday. If you do not need biometric unlock, cheaper wireless keyboards are cited as better value.

  • Yes. It can wake and unlock a closed-lid laptop setup with Touch ID, making it useful as an external keyboard for clamshell mode. An Apple Watch plus any other wireless keyboard can also unlock a closed-lid Mac, so Touch ID is not the only option.

  • No backlighting is mentioned, and that is called out as a drawback at this price. The keyboard also uses standard scissor-style keys rather than mechanical switches.

  • Yes. An Apple Watch plus any other wireless keyboard can unlock a closed-lid Mac, and some users prefer an MX-style keyboard with watch-based auth instead. That means this keyboard is mainly for people who specifically want Touch ID built into the keyboard.

  • Touch ID can stop working and may remain broken for extended periods, with one report of it failing for about a year across macOS releases and betas. That makes the biometric feature valuable when it works, but not something to assume is permanently trouble-free.

  • Yes. Windows users can use a USB fingerprint reader, a keyboard or mouse with a built-in fingerprint reader, a Windows Hello webcam, a YubiKey, or phone-based unlock. Those options avoid being tied to Apple's keyboard ecosystem.

It's the only way to have an external keyboard that can wake and unlock(touchid) a closed lid laptop setup.
it's not the only way. If you have an Apple Watch and any other wireless keyboard, you can unlock a closed-lid laptop setup easily Smilie

not everyone wants a mechanical/rgb keyboard. please don't make me defend apple

I mean, I tap my Evga, and my Apple Watch unlocks it. I game like a gut punched Saiyan on my MacBook Air, so I just can't bring myself back to the beauty that is Apple Chiclet and TouchID

Still Overpriced!!
Literally half the price of an iPad for a keyboard. Absolutely nuts people pay these prices.

I didn't say RGB. There are some excellent reasonably priced mechanical keyboards with a tasteful white backlight.
Or membrane keyboards if you prefer that.

You have your password saved as a macro that you can use before logging into the computer?Doesn't seem secure.
It's an interesting idea. If he uses a combination of keys for the macro, it's reasonably secure. Even if someone breaks into his house and steals his computer and keyboard, what are the chances they'll guess the key combo, or even think that he'd have a macro for this? They'll probably just sell the keyboard and MacBook separately with no idea that it has a password macro stored on it.

For Windows you can just buy a USB fingerprint reader. Or buy a keyboard or mouse with a fingerprint reader built in; they are available for Windows as well, and you aren't restricted to only peripherals made by Microsoft. Or get a webcam that supports Windows hello and put it on top of your monitor. Or use a Yubikey. Or install an Android app like Remote Fingerprint Unlock; use the fingerprint reader on your phone to unlock your windows computer.

There are many options.

If you're already deep in the Apple ecosystem, it makes more sense to just buy an Apple Watch (auth over watch) and then get an MX setup. The keyboard is superior in almost every way (you can pseudo-KVM multiple Macs/iPads). Apple even acknowledges this in their marketing of the Mac mini for example.
