Apple Magic Keyboard with Touch ID and Numeric Keypad is valued most for its Touch ID convenience, especially for waking and unlocking a closed lid Mac setup and for frequent daily sign ins. The extended layout, full size arrow keys, and document navigation controls add practical use, and the keyboard is described as superior to many alternatives for Apple ecosystem workflows. The main drawbacks are the high price, the lack of backlighting, and the absence of mechanical switches. Touch ID reliability has also been reported as broken for long stretches on some setups, making it a premium accessory with a few notable tradeoffs.

Common Questions (6)

  • For frequent Mac login and authentication, Touch ID is treated as the main reason to buy it, with one comment valuing it at about $100 and using it around 10 times per workday. If you do not need biometric unlock, cheaper wireless keyboards are cited as better value.

  • Yes. It can wake and unlock a closed-lid laptop setup with Touch ID, making it useful as an external keyboard for clamshell mode. An Apple Watch plus any other wireless keyboard can also unlock a closed-lid Mac, so Touch ID is not the only option.

  • No backlighting is mentioned, and that is called out as a drawback at this price. The keyboard also uses standard scissor-style keys rather than mechanical switches.

  • Yes. An Apple Watch plus any other wireless keyboard can unlock a closed-lid Mac, and some users prefer an MX-style keyboard with watch-based auth instead. That means this keyboard is mainly for people who specifically want Touch ID built into the keyboard.

  • Touch ID can stop working and may remain broken for extended periods, with one report of it failing for about a year across macOS releases and betas. That makes the biometric feature valuable when it works, but not something to assume is permanently trouble-free.

  • Yes. Windows users can use a USB fingerprint reader, a keyboard or mouse with a built-in fingerprint reader, a Windows Hello webcam, a YubiKey, or phone-based unlock. Those options avoid being tied to Apple's keyboard ecosystem.

i havent seen a keyboard that can memorize any macro built into the keyboard itself.
Nearly every name brand gaming keyboard can store macros locally in the keyboard: Corsair, Logitech G-series, Razer, SteelSeries, Asus ROG, ...

I use a g.skill mechanical keyboard I bought 10 years ago, and it stores macros on the keyboard; I've used this feature myself.

It's an interesting idea. If he uses a combination of keys for the macro, it's reasonably secure. Even if someone breaks into his house and steals his computer and keyboard, what are the chances they'll guess the key combo, or even think that he'd have a macro for this? They'll probably just sell the keyboard and MacBook separately with no idea that it has a password macro stored on it.
My two cents is that yes, the average person with physical access to your setup is not figuring out a random macro that you have (unless they live with you and observe you doing it). If you unjustly get raided and the equipment gets stolen, security professionals would find out about your macro, and that is concerning, because the more information is in their hands, the easier it is for you to be incriminated for that one totally legal copy of Photoshop that you downloaded 7 years ago, etc.
Also, keep in mind that a wireless keyboard is not completely secure in the first place, and whether you are using a macro or typing out the password, if someone nearby has a cheap $15 radio hooked up to a computer, they can potentially just listen in on your wireless keyboard if it's not using encryption.

Agreed. The only reason would be for TouchID.

I just don't understand Apple's thinking. They make such great products yet their accessories like Magic Mouse and Apple Keyboard are so glaringly deficient.

I would buy an apple keyboard with TouchID in a HEARTBEAT and would pay $200 for it if it came in a MX-like black color, had illuminated keys, good key press and had TouchID
A magic mouse with TouchID would be cool.
