The quality they make now would never last 40 years.
I agree they aren't as sturdy as they used to be, but I have one at the coast and it's doing much better than a "stainless" grill at the same age.

Put mine together tonight. The kettle portion and lid are fairly robust, but the legs/wheels/connections are the thinnest metal humanity can create. I plan to upgrade it with a thermometer and heat-proof handle for the damper.
you can add thermometer to this? interested in your upgrades.

This is so much better than every gas grill listed on SD. I'm using a 40 year old weber that was passed down to me from my mom. I had an expensive/nice propane grill that made things "look" BBQ'd, but not taste BBQ'd. If you're debating this over a gas grill, go with this.
Better is subjective on the gas vs charcoal debate BUT…there is no way the quality of this grill in 2026 is anywhere close to one from 40 years ago. Materials have been "cost saved", skimped, etc. 2026 versions might last 40 years, might not.

Thanks a bunch OP! I couldn't help myself & got one yesterday. I'm digging the green/black tones with the USA flag! Didn't need a second one since the OG black kettle I got 11 years ago during after summer clearance at Walmart for $35 has still been holding up, couldn't let this pass up!

They are ok. I have one set from ten years ago. They still work, however they are on the light weight side, it's a bit pain to clean them when it's hot. They can tip over easily if you're not careful while cleaning.

Drilling a hole in the enamel is easier said than done. I tried this on an older Weber I have, and found the enamel would crack. It's very difficult to drill a clean hole in the lid.

It's 2026. At this point, we choose both, as both have their place. Gas grills certainly at home on the patio; charcoal for special cooks, or on the road, the tailgate, the campsite.
I haven't used my gas grill since I got my kettle. But it is still nice to have as an option lol

Can you upgrade this with the ash catcher?
If you're talking about upgrading this to the master touch model with the ash bucket, it is not an easy upgrade. Weber no longer sells the One Touch model. This grill is either NOS or specially made for the Home Depot. They state that this isn't an easy bolt-on installation either, and may require custom fabrication. The ash catcher on this model is a simple, open pan that installs on the legs, with special slots on the legs designed to hold it in place. On the master touch, the ash bucket installs on a fixed ring that is permanently mounted on the grill itself. The ash sweeper is also different and requires retrofitting. Not having the Master Touch ash bucket is a dealbreaker for me. That ash pan is a mess that blows everywhere, and it's also a fire hazard.

I needed a grill and don't have one since moving two years ago. I was eyeing the premium waiting on a sale, but $99 for the OG one I had to bite. Wish the premium would have been on sale. I like the temp gauge feature and obviously the ash catcher is huge pro.

I don't know why everyone goes crazy for this. I have it and not impressed. No matter what I do either burns it or too weak and uneven. And the grill surface is a *** to clean.

Yep. Weber was sold a long time ago. The quality is gone on these low end models.
