This is absolutely a faux-Damascus printed (maybe etched?) pattern on the surface of the blade, and not a real, layered Damascus steel, guaranteed. I'm not against cheap knives (ask me about Winco's forged knocked) but I don't buy knives that have fake stuff printed on them to try to make them look like fancy knives. If that's not a red flag concerning the quality, I don't know what is. Surely these will cut, but they're cheap crap.

Community Reviews

These Sunnecko knives are positioned as low cost everyday cutters, with sharp blades and a pakkawood handle that can feel like a solid value for basic kitchen use. The larger version has been praised as a favorite, and the knives have enough positive feedback to draw interest. The main concern is the blade finish, which is repeatedly called faux Damascus or laser engraved rather than real layered steel. That makes the decorative pattern feel misleading, even if the knife still cuts. A budget pick with a flashy finish, but not much confidence in the Damascus claim.

Common Questions (3)

  • The blade is described as laser engraved, not Damascus pattern, and the surface pattern is reported to be faux-Damascus rather than layered steel. It can still cut, but the decorative finish is for appearance rather than true Damascus construction.

  • They can be a decent value if you want a sharp inexpensive knife, and one owner of a prior deal was pleased with the knives themselves. A caveat is that some buyers found the quality disappointing and even had returns refunded without sending the knife back.

  • The listing has over 100 reviews and one shopper said the reviews looked very good. That said, the comments also flag concerns about the faux-Damascus finish and overall build quality.

I know my steels and only buy VG10 last ridiculously long time before I need to sharpen on my fine German real carat diamond hone.

The last one of these I bought which looked remarkably similar wasn't even made of real layered steel, just a (remarkably crappy) print on the metal to make it look like it. I wouldn't expect much more at these bargain basement prices. Buyer beware.

Paying extra for the 'cool' Damascus steel finish just means the actual quality of the knife is even cheaper than it has to be. There was once good reason for Damascus steel hundreds of years ago. Modern steel is in most cases better, so you're just paying for appearances. That's even assuming any of them are really DS, because they're usually not and just added for effect. Either with thin layers of real DS on worked on the faces of the blade made from modern steel anyway, or some other means like etching fake DS patterns. Might as well just buy some knives that are color coated instead. At least that has some use to it.

EDIT: I don't know anything about this particular knife and never owned one. Just object to using Damascus on modern blades on principle.

yeah that was my first thought too. if it was real damascus then the layering of the metals would make it harder to clean and bacteria would thrive, unless it was very well made, and youre not gonna get a very well made knife like that for this price.

oh i just looked at the pictures down the page, it literally says "Laser engraved, not Damascus pattern" lmao
