Arg.. Who makes insignia fridges? It is one thing to have a tv crap out on you but a fridge might cost you a bit more than you would think if it fails.. I have a 1983 gibson that wont die. It is yellow, and in the basement for beer. I am on fridge # 3 since we moved it to the basement because she favors form over funtion. It is my ace in a argument when ever the discussion comes up about replacement #4. She had to have french doors and ice/water in the door.. All fridges were in the $1000 each and up (last one was $1800) and they need to see the repairman more often than I see a doctor.. This simple design has me thinking but if it has a crappy compressor, I will buy a used fridge from FB market place..

This particular model is made by Midea according to Google AI.

You bring up good points! I had an LG linear compressor fridge go bad twice. I think they've since solved most of the problems, but it's a pain to deal with.

You have two things against you. First, Consumer Reports says that the in-door water and ice dispenser is the part that breaks most. They recommend against getting that feature. Second, French door models have a shorter lifespan than top freezer ones.

As for Insignia, it's Best Buy's house brand. Most of their appliances are made by Midea, a huge manufacturer of appliances that are branded by others. If an appliance isn't made by a major company like Samsung, LG or GE, there's a good chance that it's made by Midea.

My experience with Insignia appliances is fine. I'd have no problems buying one again. However, Consumer Reports recommend against cheaper brands like Insignia.

This is a bottom freezer model, which is comparable to French door models in longevity. If durability is your criteria, top freezer models are the best. That's because they have the fewest parts. Cold air naturally drops down from the freezer down to the fridge, without needing any special pumps.

Second would be bottom freezer and French door models. Since cold air naturally falls, you'd need a pump to bring it from the bottom freezer up to the refrigerator. That's one more component to break.

Least durable are side by side models.

oh yes.. I know.. but other (females) in my life always choose form over function..

The original fridge fom the 80's still works. It has been sent to the basement since the 90's. The pretty fridges in the new remodeled cove has died or started to get sick on the average every 3-5 years since.. They have come and gone. The frige fom the fridge from 82 still rocks on. The gold collor went out of style 40 yrs age though.


Was it the old school refriderator style widely copied just luck? Look around..

The kool home and garden remodel channel gave a segment of the viewership a impractatical idea that a willing industry would like to try to fill.. There were not a lot of raepate buisness from the washers and dryers of the 90's so they had to sell a new "life style" acsessory to the mass consumers.

Simplicity is the the elagance of any durable system.

Freinds dont let friensds buy cappy aplliences because the bottom feederrs (me) wont be able to reuse them.
