I "upgraded" to this model from an older model. I seem to have a lot of internet issues with this model. Like, I can print from my phone, but not my laptop.

Renewed vs new for $60 more?
I purchased a refurb of this model last week, and it's basically brand new. If it was ever used at one point, I can't even tell. Allegedly, these go through an even stricter testing process than new machines since they're resold, but who really knows. Of course this sale pops up right after I bought one 😑

I bought this exact printer in March. Replaced my much older Brother printer. So far (3,000 or so pages) it's been flawless.

No duplex scanning no deal
I've been waiting on a Brother duplex scanning unit for a long time now but still haven't seen any deal. Their printers last forever.

I have one of these. The print is light. I'd love to find a way to make it darker, but nothing seems to work

I got my parents a brother some years ago with duplex printing and scanning and it's the best AIO by far. I wish I got myself one. I've had several AIOs from HP injects to laser and nothing beats the brother. Super fast duplex scanning. In this day and age buying a printer without it is just throwing money away

I hear you, I rather invest in a new one that comes with duplex scanning than to have 2 units sitting side by side. I've been looking for a long time and not sure if that good deal day will ever come.

What's the toner situation on this bad boy? Is it easy to get/use generic toner?
Generics work until they don't. The brands I have tried are not as good as the originals. Faded prints etc. There are brands that are better than others. So your mileage will vary.

AI recommendation below. Since I don't need color, so I am leaning for the 2820 if it comes down to about $200. I would love to hear other folks have any comments or recommendations.

Brother MFC-J6560DW if you need color and low operating costs. $310 @ brother.com [brother-usa.com]

Brother MFC-L2820DW if nearly all your printing is black and white. $280 @ brother.com [brother-usa.com]

On the Brother webpage for both those models under the Scan section, it's Duplex Scanning: No.

You are absolutely right and ChatGPT is wrong! Thank you for pointing it out. I can cross out both of these models from my tracking list. Repped.

Update: using the search function on the brother website, also gave wrong results for duplex scanning. After a model comparison I was able to find this model Brother MFC-L2750DW [brother-usa.com] capable of duplex scanning for $270.

Yes. Generic toner units come with or without a chip. The ones without a chip require you to move the chip from the old toner cartridge to the new one. Not hard to do, but can be messy if the toner leaks out.

Also, there is a separate "drum" unit that has to be replaced. Not as often as the toner units, but it's a separate unit into which the toner units fit.

Generic toner units (TN830XL high yield / 3000 pages) with a chip are $35-45 for two -- so it's less than a penny per page to print.

The drum units, DR830, are $20-35 and last for about 15,000 pages -- sometimes longer, and the printer will alert you when it needs to be replaced.

Some prefer to buy bundled toner and drum units and replace them both at once. More expensive and wasteful, but less chance of printing issues.

These are workhorses and last a long time.

They have WiFi, Ethernet, and USB ports (USB is most reliable IMO and uses no power in deep sleep mode. Both Ethernet and especially WiFi use power in sleep or deep sleep mode).

The Brother scanner software is crap and buggy. Just use a different and better scanner software.

NAPS2 (Not Another PDF Scanner 2) is a free, open-source document scanning software for Windows, Mac, and Linux. It allows users to quickly scan documents and save them as PDFs, images (JPEG, PNG), or TIFFs. It features built-in OCR (Optical Character Recognition) to create searchable PDFs.

Note: no fax on this model if that matters.
What is this fax thing? I scan docs in pdf and send through the internet.

First thing you should do once you power it on is disable the firmware autocheck on the printer. I'd even block the printer from internet access.
Thanks for this. I checked out the security concerns and they are real. Follow-up question: Have a 13 yo brother printer I was trying to salvage. The firmware was way out of date and the only way I could possibly update was with the Brother app, iScan or something?). Never got it updated. Regarding your security concern, would you use NOT use wifi to connect to OP's printer and, or use the brother app? Thx!
