Q, Does this require a license to transfer on most frequencies or to use a repeater ?

A, Yes, transmitting with the Baofeng UV-5R Mini requires a license in the U.S. and most countries.

Q, Is it hard to get a ham radio license ?

A, Ham radio technician license very easy 4 to 6 hours of studying you only have to answer 27 multiple choice questions out of 35 to pass.

Q, Is this a great radio ?

A,No

Q, Is this a good deal for what you get ?

A , Yes

Is it me or this is a crazy price for a pair. 5R usually go for more than this just for 1 and if I recall correctly many people recommended 5r mini before and unless this is a fake by 3rd party seller this seems like a real slick deal to get started with these radios. USBC alone is a step over 5R.

What's the next step up from the ubiquitous UV5R?

Thinking a pair of these plus a pair of whatever's the next step up to work on ham license with the nephews.

Wow by the time I posted the comment and went back to complete order, it was out of stock, then tried to reorder, let me place order but new delivery schedule is "Arriving July 14 - July 16" .

Still, a great deal, thanks OP.

Honestly at this price I'd just get these and see if there is truly any interest or not before spending way too much for something you won't need or use.

It lets me add to cart but I can't check out which is weird for Amazon. But I tried multiple times and it's consistent.

Really good radios for the price; I have them in my vehicles in case my mobile unit fails or driver and passenger(s) are forced to separate in the backcountry. Some have demonstrated dirty transmission harmonics while others have not. Whether using as a ham radio or GMRS, both require the appropriate license(s) for transmitting but not for listening. For those not much into radio, the learning curve can feel steep, especially if using repeaters and requires knowing about PL tones, offset, and how to program one of these. The Ola app works sort of okay-ish; I use it only to remind me about details for repeater details based on location (>900 repeaters in mine). CHIRP (free programmer) works great and RT Systems (awesome software) just came out with a programmer for these on a Mac while the PC version has been around for a while. Programming on the fly is clumsy, slow, and frustrating, as it is on most of the highest-end HTs. No GPS/APRS native capabilities. You can listen to NOAA weather broadcasts and FM radio stations too. For less than $10/radio, a great deal but unless you know your way around these types of radios (any brand), expect some frustrations early on, and even if a GMRS license holder, transmitting on GMRS is not ok with the FCC for this particular amateur band radio. If you're considering getting a technician ham license ($14-15 to take the test online [from home or work] or in person), these are a very inexpensive way to get started. I give all new technicians I meet at least one of these radios so I just reordered more to replete my stock. Some purists might frown on these, and as the owner of a small handful of the most expensive HTs available commercially, I say whatever....

We used them during Helene. Got some of the rescue channels and heard first responders rescuing, or trying to rescue, people.
